3 October.

The men waited a long time for Lord Godalming and Quincey Morris. Jonathan Harker looked very different today. Yesterday, he looked young and happy. Today, he looked like an old man. His hair was white and his face was thin. But Jonathan Harker was still very determined to stop the Count.

Dr. Van Helsing spoke about Count Dracula. He studied many papers about the monster. Long ago, the Count was a famous soldier and a smart man. Now, he is dead but his brain still works. Dr. Van Helsing said the Count has a "child-brain." This means he is learning new things slowly. He is trying new experiments to become more powerful.

Suddenly, a boy arrived with a telegram from Mina Harker. The telegram said, "Dracula left Carfax. He is going south." Jonathan Harker was happy. He wanted to find the Count immediately. But Dr. Van Helsing told him to wait. They needed to be careful.

Lord Godalming and Quincey Morris arrived at the house in Piccadilly. They were successful. They found twelve boxes of earth and destroyed them. Now, Dracula had only one box left. The men waited in the dining room. They were ready to fight.

They heard a key in the lock. Count Dracula entered the house. He moved very quickly, like a wild cat. Jonathan Harker ran at him with a large knife. He tried to hit the Count’s heart. The Count jumped back, so the knife only cut his coat. A lot of paper money and gold sovereigns (gold coins) fell out of the coat.

Count Dracula looked very angry. His eyes were red and his face was pale. The men held up their crucifixes. The Count was afraid and he ran to the window. He jumped out and landed in the yard. Then, he went into the stable. He looked at the men and laughed.

The Count said, "You think you can stop me? I have many centuries to wait. My revenge is just beginning! Your women belong to me now. Soon, you will all belong to me too!" Then he ran away. Dr. Van Helsing burned the Count’s papers and took the money. The men went back to see Mina Harker.

Mina Harker was waiting for them. She was very brave. She took Jonathan’s head in her hands and kissed him. They ate supper together. Mina Harker listened to their story. She was sad about the danger to her husband. Then she spoke to the men.

Mina Harker said they must not hate the Count. She said his soul was very sad. She wanted them to feel pity for him. Jonathan Harker was very angry. He wanted to send the Count’s soul to hell. But Mina Harker said, "One day, I might need pity too." Jonathan Harker cried and knelt beside his wife.

Jonathan Harker’s Journal.

3-4 October, midnight.

Jonathan Harker could not sleep. He was worried because Dracula still had one box of earth. He loved Mina Harker very much. He was glad she was sleeping quietly. He watched her face and felt a little hope. Then, Mina Harker woke up suddenly.

Mina Harker whispered, "Someone is in the hall!" Jonathan Harker opened the door. Quincey Morris was resting on a mattress outside. Quincey Morris was watching the room to keep them safe. Jonathan Harker went back to bed. He felt happy that his friends were so brave.

4 October, morning.

Mina Harker woke Jonathan Harker again before the sun rose. She told him to call Dr. Van Helsing. She had an idea. She wanted the Professor to hypnotise (to put someone in a special sleep so they can talk) her. She felt she could speak freely before the dawn.

Dr. Van Helsing came to the room. He moved his hands in front of Mina’s face. Soon, her eyes closed. She was in a deep sleep. Dr. Van Helsing asked, "Where are you?" Mina Harker answered in a strange voice. She said, "I do not know. It is dark."

Dr. Van Helsing asked, "What do you hear?" Mina Harker said, "I hear water. I hear men walking on a ship. I hear a chain moving. I hear an anchor (a heavy metal hook to stop a ship) moving." Then, the sun rose and Mina Harker woke up. She did not remember what she said.

Dr. Van Helsing was very excited. He knew Dracula was on a ship. The Count was trying to escape from London. He took his last box of earth to the sea. The men wanted to let him go. But Dr. Van Helsing said no. They must follow Dracula to the end.

Dr. Van Helsing said they must save Mina Harker. The Count’s mark was still on her forehead. If Dracula lived, Mina Harker would become a vampire forever. Jonathan Harker felt very afraid, but he knew they must continue the fight.
