Victor Frankenstein and Elizabeth Lavenza landed the boat at eight o'clock. they walked on the shore for a short time. They watched the last light of the sun. Then they went to the inn (a small hotel). They looked at the dark lake and the black mountains.
The wind began to blow very hard. It came from the west. Dark clouds moved quickly across the moon. The waves on the lake grew larger. Suddenly, a heavy rain started to fall.
Victor Frankenstein was calm during the day. But he felt a thousand fears at night. He held a pistol (a small gun) in his hand. He was ready to fight. He wanted to kill his enemy or die in the battle.
Elizabeth Lavenza saw that Victor Frankenstein was nervous. She felt afraid because he looked so worried. She asked Victor Frankenstein why he was scared. Victor Frankenstein told her to be peaceful. He said that this night was very dangerous.
Victor Frankenstein told Elizabeth Lavenza to go to her room. He did not want her to see the fight with the monster. Victor Frankenstein walked through the house. He looked in every corner for the monster. He did not find any sign of his enemy.
Suddenly, Victor Frankenstein heard a terrible scream. The sound came from Elizabeth Lavenza’s room. Victor Frankenstein finally understood the truth. He felt the blood stop in his body. He heard the scream again and ran into the room.

The people from the inn ran into the room. They were very afraid. Victor Frankenstein went to the bed. He held Elizabeth Lavenza in his arms. Her body was cold. He saw the black marks of fingers on her neck. The monster strangled her.
Victor Frankenstein looked up. The moon was bright in the window. He saw the monster outside. The monster had a horrible smile on his face. He pointed his finger at the body of Elizabeth Lavenza. Victor Frankenstein fired his pistol. But the monster jumped into the lake and escaped.
The sound of the gun brought more people. Victor Frankenstein showed them where the monster went. The men used boats and nets to find him. But they found nothing. Many people thought Victor Frankenstein imagined the monster.
Victor Frankenstein was very sick and weak. He had a high fever. The people at the inn put him in a bed. Victor Frankenstein looked around the room. He felt like he lost everything.
Later, Victor Frankenstein went to the room where Elizabeth Lavenza lay. He cried with the other women. He thought about all the people who died. He thought about William, Justine, and Henry Clerval. He was worried about his father and his brother Ernest.
Victor Frankenstein decided to return to Geneva immediately. There were no horses. He had to travel by boat on the lake. The rain was very heavy and the wind was strong. Victor Frankenstein tried to row the boat, but he was too sad and weak.
Victor Frankenstein looked at the lake. He saw the fish in the water. He remembered that Elizabeth Lavenza watched the fish the day before. Now his life was completely different. He was the most miserable man in the world.
Victor Frankenstein arrived in Geneva. His father and Ernest were alive. But Victor Frankenstein’s father was very old and weak. He loved Elizabeth Lavenza very much. He could not live with the news of her death. He died in Victor Frankenstein’s arms a few days later.
Victor Frankenstein went mad. He stayed in a prison cell with chains for many months. He lived in darkness. Sometimes he dreamed of his old friends. But then he woke up in the sad prison. Finally, his mind became clear and the guards let him go.
Victor Frankenstein wanted revenge (the act of hurting someone because they hurt you). He hated the monster. He wanted to find the monster and kill him. He prayed for the strength to find his enemy.
One month later, Victor Frankenstein went to see a magistrate (a judge). He told the magistrate his story. He told the judge about the monster he created. He asked the judge to catch the murderer. Victor Frankenstein was very serious and calm.
At first, the magistrate did not believe the story. But then he saw that Victor Frankenstein was telling the truth. The magistrate felt a great horror. He listened to every word.
The magistrate spoke kindly to Victor Frankenstein. But he did not want to help. He said the monster was too strong. He said no man could catch a creature that lives in the ice and mountains. He told Victor Frankenstein that he would probably be disappointed.
Victor Frankenstein became very angry. His eyes were bright with rage. He told the magistrate that his only reason to live was to kill the monster. He said he would find the monster alone.
The magistrate thought Victor Frankenstein was still mad. He tried to calm Victor Frankenstein like a child. Victor Frankenstein was very upset. He left the house and began to plan his next move.
