The friends left the forest and came to a steep hill. The hill was covered with big rocks. "This will be a hard climb," said the Scarecrow, "but we must do it."
As they started to climb, a rough voice shouted, "Keep back!" A strange man's head appeared from behind a rock. "This hill is ours," the man said. "You cannot cross it."
The man was short and fat. He had a big, flat head and a wrinkled neck. He did not have any arms. The Scarecrow was not afraid. He walked forward. "We must cross your hill," he said.
Suddenly, the man's head shot forward on his long neck. It hit the Scarecrow hard. The Scarecrow tumbled all the way down the hill. Then they heard loud laughing from all over the hill. Dorothy saw hundreds of these armless men. They were the Hammer-Heads.
The Lion was very angry. He gave a loud roar and ran up the hill. But a Hammer-Head's head shot out and hit him too. The great Lion rolled down the hill.
"We cannot fight people with shooting heads," the Lion said.
"What can we do?" Dorothy asked.
"Call the Winged Monkeys," said the Tin Woodman. "You can use the Golden Cap one more time."
"Good idea!" said Dorothy. She put on the cap and said the magic words. The Winged Monkeys came right away.
"What is your command?" the Monkey King asked. This was Dorothy's third and last command.
"Carry us over this hill to the country of the Quadlings," she said.
"It will be done," the King said. The monkeys picked up the four friends and Toto. They flew over the hill. The Hammer-Heads shouted angrily, but they could not reach them. The monkeys set them down safely on the other side.
"This is the last time we can help you," the Monkey King said. "Goodbye and good luck." Then they flew away.
The friends were now in the country of the Quadlings (the people who live in the South). Everything here was painted red. The houses, bridges, and fences were red. The Quadling people were short and friendly. They all wore red clothes.
They went to a farmhouse and asked for food. A kind woman gave them a wonderful dinner. "How far is it to Glinda's castle?" Dorothy asked.
"It is not far," the woman said. "Just follow the road to the South."
They thanked the woman and started walking again. Soon, they saw a beautiful castle. In front of the gate were three young girls in red uniforms. They were soldiers. "Why are you here?" one soldier asked.
"We want to see Glinda, the Good Witch," Dorothy said.
"I will ask if she will see you," the soldier said. She went into the castle. She came back a few moments later. "Glinda will see you now," she said.
