Pinocchio waited for twenty minutes. It felt like a very long time. He walked around the field and dreamed of wealth. He planned to build a palace and buy many candies and toys.

He went back to the hole. He expected to see a tree full of gold. But there was nothing. He looked again, but the ground was empty. He began to feel worried.

Suddenly, he heard someone laughing. He saw a big Parrot in a tree. Pinocchio asked the Parrot why he was laughing. The Parrot said he was laughing at foolish people.

The Parrot told Pinocchio that gold does not grow like beans. He said that honest money comes from hard work. Pinocchio began to shake with fear. He asked about his gold pieces.

The Parrot said the Fox and the Cat returned while Pinocchio was away. They took the gold and ran away. Pinocchio began to dig in the earth with his hands. He made a deep hole, but the money was gone.

Pinocchio was very sad. He ran to the city to find a judge (a person who decides if someone is guilty). The judge was a large Gorilla. He wore glasses and looked very serious.

Pinocchio told the Gorilla about the robbery. He described the Fox and the Cat. He asked for justice. The Gorilla listened quietly. He seemed to feel sorry for Pinocchio.

Then the Gorilla rang a bell. Two large dogs in uniforms entered the room. The Gorilla pointed at Pinocchio. He said that Pinocchio was a fool. He ordered the dogs to take Pinocchio to prison.

Pinocchio was shocked. He did nothing wrong, but he was sent to jail. He stayed in prison for four long months. He was very unhappy and lonely.

One day, the ruler of the city won a great battle. To celebrate, he opened the doors of the prison. All the prisoners were allowed to go home.

The guard told Pinocchio he could not leave because he was not a criminal. Pinocchio did not want to stay in jail. He told the guard that he was a thief too.

The guard believed him and opened the door. Pinocchio was finally free. He ran out of the prison as fast as he could. He did not look back.
