Focus and emphasis
Which part of the sentence is the most important or new?
Betekenis
Focus and emphasis make one part of a message stand out as the main point, an answer, or a correction. They guide the listener toward what matters most at that moment. Languages may use stress, word order, or special phrases; not all have a dedicated position or marker for this. Topic sets the starting point of the message, while Focus and emphasis highlights what we say about it.
Zo herken je het
Ask which part answers the current question or corrects another idea, and notice whether it stands out through sound, position, or special wording.
In de taal die je leert
English often highlights a word through extra stress while keeping the usual word order. A cleft sentence, a pattern such as it was Emma who called, singles out one part of the message. Stressed do, does, or did can also strengthen a positive statement or correct a negative claim.
I wanted tea, not coffee.
Extra stress on tea highlights the correction; the usual word order stays the same.
It was Emma who called.
The it was … who … pattern singles out Emma as the person who called.
I do like this song.
Stressed do strengthens the statement, perhaps correcting the idea that the speaker dislikes the song.
Learners whose language places the highlighted phrase directly before the verb may copy that order into English instead of using stress or a cleft sentence. Learners whose language does not use a helping verb for emphasis may overlook the force of stressed do, does, or did.
