Stress and intonation

Which parts stand out, and how does the voice rise and fall?

stress intonation

Betekenis

The way your voice makes parts stand out, rises and falls helps the listener understand your message. These sound choices can highlight a contrast, signal a question or show your attitude. Languages use different patterns, and some have no word stress. Tone concerns pitch patterns that distinguish words or grammatical forms, rather than the emphasis and melody of a whole message.

Zo herken je het

Listen for syllables or words that stand out and for rises and falls in the voice, then compare how changing these patterns changes the message.

Engels

In English, the stressed syllable of a word is not always the first, and sentence stress highlights important information. Yes/no questions often end with a rise, while ordinary statements and questions with a question word often end with a fall. These are common patterns, not fixed rules: the speaker's attitude and the situation can change them.

I ordered tea, not coffee.

Stress on tea highlights the correction.

Are you ready?

In a neutral question, the voice commonly rises at the end.

Where do you live?

This ordinary question commonly ends with a fall, despite being a question.

Veelvoorkomend struikelpunt

Learners whose language normally stresses the first syllable may stress English words in the wrong place. Learners whose language uses different question melodies may carry those patterns into English or emphasize information they did not intend to highlight.
