Tom Sawyer dreamed about the treasure all night. In his dreams, he held the gold in his hands four times. But every time he woke up, the gold was gone. Tom Sawyer felt very sad because the money was not there.

In the morning, Tom Sawyer thought about his adventure. He began to think the treasure was just a dream. The money was too much to be real. Tom Sawyer never saw fifty dollars in his life. He did not believe that thousands of dollars really existed.

Then Tom Sawyer thought about the adventure again. The details became very clear in his mind. He decided that the treasure was real. He needed to be sure. Tom Sawyer ate his breakfast quickly and went to find Huckleberry Finn.

Huckleberry Finn was sitting on a boat by the river. He looked very sad. Tom Sawyer waited for Huckleberry Finn to speak. If Huckleberry Finn spoke about the money, then it was real.

"Tom, we left our tools at the tree," Huckleberry Finn said. "That is why we lost the money. It is terrible!"

"So it was not a dream!" Tom Sawyer shouted. "I am almost sorry it is real, Huck."

"It was not a dream," Huckleberry Finn said. "I dreamed about that Spaniard all night. He was very scary."

"We must find him," Tom Sawyer said. "We must find his 'Number Two'."

The boys talked about "Number Two." They did not know what it meant. Then Tom Sawyer had an idea. He thought "Number Two" was a room in a tavern (a building where people stay, eat, and drink).

There were only two taverns in the town. Tom Sawyer went to check them. At the first tavern, a lawyer lived in room number two. At the second tavern, room number two was a mystery.

The tavern-keeper’s son spoke to Tom Sawyer. He said the room was always locked. He only saw people go inside at night. He saw a light in the room the night before.

"I think that is the place," Tom Sawyer told Huckleberry Finn. "I have a plan. We will find many keys. We will go to the tavern on a dark night. We will try to open the door."

"I am afraid of Injun Joe," Huckleberry Finn said.

"It will be dark," Tom Sawyer said. "He will not see you. If you see him, follow him. If he goes to room number two, we know it is the right place."

Huckleberry Finn was nervous, but he agreed to help. The boys promised to be brave.
