The White Rabbit came back. He looked for his things and he was very worried. He said, "The Duchess (a woman from a very important family) will be very angry! She will kill me!" Alice wanted to help him, but she could not find the fan or the gloves.
The White Rabbit saw Alice. He was angry and he spoke in a loud voice. He called her "Mary Ann" because he thought Alice was his servant. He told Alice to run to his house. He wanted a pair of gloves and a fan quickly. Alice was afraid, so she ran in the direction he pointed.
Alice found a small, neat house. A sign on the door said "W. RABBIT." Alice went inside and ran upstairs. She did not want to meet the real Mary Ann. She found a table with a fan and some small white gloves.
Alice saw a little bottle near a mirror. This bottle did not have a label. Alice was curious and she drank from the bottle. "I hope I grow large again," Alice thought. "I am tired of being small."
Alice grew very fast. Her head hit the ceiling. She had to stop drinking, but it was too late. She grew and grew. Soon, she had to kneel on the floor. Then, there was no more room. She put one arm out of the window and one foot into the chimney (the hole above a fire for smoke).
Alice was very uncomfortable. She was stuck inside the house. She was sad and she wanted to be at home. "This is a very strange life," she thought. "I am in the middle of a fairy tale!"
The White Rabbit came to the house. He tried to open the door, but Alice’s elbow was against it. The Rabbit was angry. He said, "I will go around to the window." Alice heard him under the window. She moved her hand to catch him, but she only heard a loud crash of glass.
The Rabbit called his servant, Pat. He asked Pat, "What is that in the window?" Pat answered, "It is an arm, sir!" The Rabbit was angry and said, "An arm! It is too big for a window! Take it away!"
The animals were afraid to go near the house. Finally, the Rabbit told a small lizard named Bill to help. Bill had to go down the chimney. Alice heard Bill moving in the chimney above her. She waited and then she kicked her foot very hard.
Alice heard the animals shout, "There goes Bill!" Bill flew high into the air. The animals were very quiet for a minute. Then the White Rabbit shouted, "We must burn the house down!" Alice cried out, "If you do, I will send my cat Dinah after you!"
The animals stopped. Then they began to throw many pebbles (small, smooth stones) at the window. The pebbles hit Alice’s face. Suddenly, Alice saw that the pebbles on the floor were turning into little cakes.
Alice had a clever idea. "If I eat a cake, I will change size," she thought. "It cannot make me bigger, so it must make me smaller." Alice ate one cake and she began to shrink (become smaller) immediately.
When Alice was small enough, she ran out of the house. A crowd of animals was outside. They all ran toward Alice, but she was fast. She ran into a thick wood and hid behind a tree.
"I must do two things," Alice said to herself. "I must grow to my right size again. Then I must find the beautiful garden." But Alice was very small and the forest was very big.
Suddenly, Alice heard a loud bark. A giant puppy looked down at her. To Alice, the puppy was as big as a horse. Alice was afraid the puppy might eat her. She picked up a stick and played with the puppy.
The puppy jumped and barked. It was a happy puppy, but it was dangerous because it was so large. Alice ran behind a large plant to stay safe. When the puppy was tired, Alice ran away as fast as she could.
Alice was very tired. She looked for something to eat or drink to grow big again. She saw a large mushroom (a plant with a round, flat top). The mushroom was the same height as Alice.
Alice stood on her toes and looked over the top. She saw a large blue Caterpillar (a long, soft insect that becomes a butterfly). The Caterpillar sat on the mushroom with its arms folded. It was smoking a long pipe and it did not look at Alice.
