Victor Frankenstein decided to leave the city of Geneva forever. He loved his country when he was happy. Now, Victor Frankenstein hated his country. Victor Frankenstein took a lot of money with him. He also took some jewels from his mother. Then, Victor Frankenstein left Geneva.
Victor Frankenstein began to travel. These travels only end when Victor Frankenstein dies. He walked across many parts of the earth. He lived through many difficult times in deserts and wild countries. Victor Frankenstein does not know how he stayed alive. Many times, Victor Frankenstein lay on the sand and wanted to die. But his anger kept him alive. Victor Frankenstein did not want to die while the monster was still alive.
When Victor Frankenstein left Geneva, he looked for the monster. But Victor Frankenstein did not have a good plan. He walked around the town for many hours. At night, Victor Frankenstein arrived at the cemetery (a place where dead people are buried). His father, William, and Elizabeth were there. Victor Frankenstein walked to their graves.
Everything was silent. Only the leaves on the trees moved in the wind. The night was very dark. The scene was very sad. Victor Frankenstein felt that the spirits of his dead family were near him. He felt their shadows in the dark night.

But the monster was too fast. The moon came out and shone on the monster. Victor Frankenstein saw the monster's ugly body as he ran away.
Victor Frankenstein followed the monster for many months. This was his only job. Victor Frankenstein followed the Rhone river. Later, Victor Frankenstein saw the blue Mediterranean sea. He saw the monster go onto a ship at night. The ship went to the Black Sea. Victor Frankenstein went on the same ship. But the monster escaped. Victor Frankenstein did not know how.
Victor Frankenstein followed the monster through Russia. The monster always stayed ahead of Victor Frankenstein. Sometimes, peasants (poor people who work on farms) saw the monster. They were very afraid. They told Victor Frankenstein where the monster went. Sometimes, the monster left marks to help Victor Frankenstein. The monster did not want Victor Frankenstein to die yet.
The snow fell on Victor Frankenstein’s head. He saw the monster’s big footprints on the white ground. Victor Frankenstein was cold and hungry. He was very tired. These were his smallest pains. Victor Frankenstein felt like he carried hell inside him. But a good spirit helped Victor Frankenstein. Sometimes, Victor Frankenstein found food in the desert. The food was simple, like the food of the peasants. Victor Frankenstein believed the spirits of his family put it there.
Victor Frankenstein followed the rivers when he could. The monster usually stayed away from rivers because people lived there. Victor Frankenstein usually ate wild animals. Victor Frankenstein had money with him. He gave money to people in the villages. They became his friends. They gave him fire and tools for cooking.
Victor Frankenstein hated his life. He was only happy when he was asleep. In his dreams, Victor Frankenstein saw his friends and his wife. Victor Frankenstein saw the kind face of his father. He heard the voice of Elizabeth. These dreams gave Victor Frankenstein strength. During the day, Victor Frankenstein felt hope for the night.
The monster left messages on the trees or on stones. These messages made Victor Frankenstein very angry. One message said, "I am still the boss. You are alive, and I am happy. Follow me to the North. You will feel the cold there. The cold does not hurt me. You will find a dead hare (a large animal like a rabbit) near here. Eat the meat. Come, my enemy. We must fight for our lives soon."
Victor Frankenstein called the monster a devil. He promised again to kill the monster. Victor Frankenstein decided to never stop his search. He wanted to finish his work. Then, Victor Frankenstein could be with Elizabeth and his friends in heaven.
Victor Frankenstein traveled further north. The snow was very deep. The cold was very strong. The peasants stayed inside their small houses. The rivers were covered with ice. Victor Frankenstein could not find fish to eat. This was very difficult for Victor Frankenstein.
The monster was happy because Victor Frankenstein’s life was hard. The monster left another message. It said, "Get ready! Your hard work is beginning. Wear furs and bring food. We will go on a journey where you will suffer a lot."
Victor Frankenstein felt more courage after he read these words. Victor Frankenstein did not want to fail. He asked Heaven to help him. Victor Frankenstein walked across the cold deserts. Finally, Victor Frankenstein saw the ocean. It was not blue like the southern sea. It was covered with ice and looked very wild. Victor Frankenstein knelt down and thanked the spirits. He was ready to fight the monster.
Victor Frankenstein bought a sledge (a vehicle that slides over snow) and some dogs. Now, Victor Frankenstein moved across the snow very fast. He began to move closer to the monster. When Victor Frankenstein saw the ocean, the monster was only one day away. Victor Frankenstein hoped to catch the monster on the beach. He arrived at a small village by the sea.
The people in the village told Victor Frankenstein about the monster. They said a giant monster arrived the night before. The monster had a gun. He was very scary. The monster took their winter food and many dogs. Then, the monster went onto the frozen sea. The people thought the monster would die in the cold.
Victor Frankenstein felt despair (a feeling of having no hope). The monster escaped again. Victor Frankenstein had to travel across the ice. It was very cold. Victor Frankenstein was from a warm country. He did not think he could survive. But then, Victor Frankenstein felt his anger again. He prepared for his journey. Victor Frankenstein got a new sledge and a lot of food. Then, Victor Frankenstein left the land.
Victor Frankenstein does not know how many days passed. He was very miserable. Big mountains of ice blocked his path. Sometimes, Victor Frankenstein heard the loud sound of the sea under the ice. It sounded like thunder. But then the water froze again, and the path was safe.
Victor Frankenstein traveled for about three weeks. He often felt very sad and cried. He almost gave up. One of his dogs died because the dog was very tired. Victor Frankenstein looked at the ice and felt a lot of pain. Suddenly, Victor Frankenstein saw a dark spot far away. It was a sledge! Victor Frankenstein saw the monster. Victor Frankenstein cried because he was so happy.
Victor Frankenstein did not stop to rest. He gave his dogs some food. He rested for only one hour. The monster’s sledge was still there. Sometimes, big rocks of ice hid the monster. But Victor Frankenstein was moving faster than the monster. After two days, Victor Frankenstein was only one mile away. Victor Frankenstein was very excited.
But then, Victor Frankenstein lost the monster. He heard the sound of the sea. The ice beneath Victor Frankenstein began to move. The wind was very strong. Suddenly, the ice broke with a loud sound. It was like an earthquake (when the ground shakes and breaks). In a few minutes, there was a sea between Victor Frankenstein and the monster. Victor Frankenstein was on a small piece of ice.
Victor Frankenstein stayed on the ice for many hours. Some of his dogs died. Victor Frankenstein was ready to die too. Then, Victor Frankenstein saw a ship. It was the ship of Captain Walton. Victor Frankenstein was surprised to see a ship so far north. Victor Frankenstein broke part of his sledge to make oars. He moved his piece of ice toward the ship.
Captain Walton took Victor Frankenstein onto the ship. Victor Frankenstein was very weak and tired. He almost died. Victor Frankenstein is still afraid of death because he has not killed the monster yet.
Victor Frankenstein asked Captain Walton for help. Victor Frankenstein said, "Walton, you must promise me something. If I die, the monster must not escape. You must find him and kill him. Do not trust the monster. He is very good at speaking, but his soul is bad. He is full of hate. Do not listen to him. Remember my family. Put your sword into the monster's heart."
