Tom Sawyer was a hero again. Everyone in the village liked him. The old people were kind to him. The young people wanted to be like him. The village newspaper even wrote his name in the paper.

Now, everyone was kind to Muff Potter, too. Before the trial, people were mean to him. Now, they were his friends. People often change their minds like that.

Tom Sawyer was happy during the day. But he was very afraid at night. He had bad dreams about Injun Joe. He did not want to go outside after the sun went down.

Huckleberry Finn was also very afraid. Tom Sawyer told the secret to the lawyer before the trial. Huckleberry Finn was worried. He was afraid Injun Joe would find out that Huckleberry Finn was also there.

Tom Sawyer felt glad that he helped Muff Potter. But at night, he wished he stayed quiet. He was afraid Injun Joe would never be caught. He was also afraid Injun Joe would return to the village.

The people looked everywhere for Injun Joe. A detective (a person whose job is to find information about a crime) came from the city of St. Louis. He looked for the killer.

The detective (a person whose job is to find information about a crime) found a clue (a sign or piece of information that helps solve a crime). But a clue (a sign or piece of information that helps solve a crime) is not a person. The detective went home. Injun Joe was still free.
