Dorothy was alone and she started to feel hungry. She went into the house and got some bread and butter. She also found some delicious fruit on the trees outside. She gave some food to Toto. She took a pail and filled it with clean water from the little river.
Next, Dorothy got ready for her journey. She had one other dress. It was a blue and white gingham dress. It was old, but it was clean and pretty. She washed her face, put on the clean dress, and put a pink hat on her head. She filled a little basket with bread for the trip.
She looked at her shoes. They were old and broken. "These shoes are not good for a long walk, Toto," she said. Toto looked at her and wagged his tail. He understood. Then Dorothy saw the silver shoes on the table. They belonged to the Wicked Witch.
"I wonder if they will fit me," she said. She tried on the silver shoes. They were a perfect fit! "These are great for a long walk," she said happily. She picked up her basket. "Come, Toto. We are going to the Emerald City. We will ask the great Oz to help us go back to Kansas."
Dorothy locked the door of the house and put the key in her pocket. She started to walk. Soon, she found the road made of yellow brick. The sun was bright and birds were singing. Dorothy felt much better. The country was very pretty, with blue fences and green fields. The Munchkins were good farmers.
Sometimes she passed a house. The Munchkin people came out and bowed to her. They knew she made them free from the Wicked Witch. Their houses were round with a big dome on top. All the houses were painted blue. Blue was the favorite color in the land of the Munchkins.
That evening, Dorothy was tired. She came to a big house where many Munchkins were having a party. They were celebrating because they were free. They were happy to see Dorothy. They invited her for supper and to stay for the night. The owner of the house was a rich Munchkin named Boq.
Boq saw Dorothy's silver shoes. "You have silver shoes and you killed the Wicked Witch. You must be a good witch," he said. Dorothy tried to explain that she was just a normal girl. But the Munchkins thought she was a friendly witch because her dress was blue and white. Blue was the Munchkin color, and white was a witch color.
After supper, Dorothy went to a nice room to sleep. Toto slept on a blue rug next to her bed. In the morning, she had a big breakfast. She played with a little Munchkin baby. The people loved Toto because they never saw a dog before.
"How far is the Emerald City?" Dorothy asked Boq.
"I do not know. It is a very long way," Boq said. "The journey will take many days. Some parts of the country are dangerous." This news worried Dorothy, but she was brave. She knew she must find Oz.
She said goodbye to her new friends and started walking on the yellow brick road again. After a few miles, she stopped to rest. She sat on a fence next to a big cornfield. In the field, she saw a Scarecrow (a doll to scare birds away from the corn). Its head was a small bag full of straw. It had a painted face and wore old blue clothes.
Dorothy looked at the Scarecrow's funny, painted face. Suddenly, one of its eyes winked at her! Then, the Scarecrow nodded its head. Dorothy was very surprised. She walked over to it.
"Good day," the Scarecrow said in a strange voice.
"Did you speak?" Dorothy asked.
"Yes," said the Scarecrow. "How are you?"
"I am fine, thank you," Dorothy said politely. "How are you?"
"I am not well," the Scarecrow said with a smile. "It is boring to stand here all day."
"Can't you get down?" Dorothy asked.
"No. A pole is in my back. Can you please help me down?"
Dorothy lifted the Scarecrow off the pole. It was very light because it was full of straw. "Thank you very much!" said the Scarecrow. He stretched his arms. "I feel like a new man."
"My name is Dorothy. I am going to the Emerald City to ask the great Oz to send me back to Kansas," she explained.
"Who is Oz?" the Scarecrow asked. "I don't know anything. You see, my head is full of straw, so I have no brain."
"Oh, I am very sorry for you," Dorothy said.
"Do you think Oz can give me a brain?" the Scarecrow asked sadly.
"I don't know," she said. "But you can come with me. We can ask him."
"Thank you!" said the Scarecrow. So they walked back to the road together. Dorothy helped the Scarecrow over the fence. Now, she had a new friend on her journey to the Emerald City.
