Clara: Hi Ben. This is an interesting one because AI chat is probably one of the easiest language-learning tools to understand. You open a conversation and start using the language.
Ben: Eso ya parece bastante útil. No siempre tengo a alguien disponible cuando de repente decido que debería practicar inglés a las once de la noche.
Ben: Which already sounds pretty useful. I don't always have somebody available when I suddenly decide I should practise Spanish at eleven at night.
Clara: Exactamente. Contar con alguien para conversar cuando quieres practicar elimina una barrera muy concreta.
Clara: Exactly. A conversation partner that is available when you want to practise removes one very practical barrier.
Puedes intentar expresar una idea, pedir una explicación cuando no sepas cómo seguir y continuar mientras la conversación te resulte útil.
You can try to express an idea, ask for an explanation when you're stuck and continue for as long as the conversation is useful to you.
Ben: Pero ahora hay chatbots de IA por todas partes. Puedo abrir un chatbot general y decirle: «Háblame en inglés».
Ben: But there are AI chatbots everywhere now. I can open a general chatbot and say, "Talk to me in Spanish."
Entonces, ¿por qué integrar un tutor en un sistema de aprendizaje de idiomas?
So why put a tutor inside a language-learning system?
Clara: Esa es la pregunta más interesante.
Clara: That's the more interesting question.
La diferencia no consiste simplemente en tener otra IA capaz de hablar.
The difference isn't simply having another AI that can talk.
Está en aquello con lo que puede conectarse la conversación.
It's what the conversation can connect to.
Si el tutor conoce parte del vocabulario que ya estás aprendiendo, puede recuperarlo durante la conversación, incluir un repaso real cuando corresponda y ayudarte a guardar algo útil que surja en el chat, entonces la conversación pasa a formar parte de un proceso de aprendizaje más amplio.
If the tutor knows something about the vocabulary you're already learning, can bring some of that vocabulary back into conversation, can include a real review when appropriate and can help you save something useful that appears during the chat, then conversation becomes part of a larger learning process.

Ben: So instead of every chat beginning from a blank page, some of my learning can travel with me.

Knowing a word when you see it in a vocabulary list is one thing. Being able to recognise it in a sentence is another. And producing it yourself during a conversation can be harder again.
La conversación te ofrece otro espacio para trabajar con el idioma que ya conoces.
Conversation gives you another place to work with language you have already encountered.
Ben: Antes de profundizar en esa conexión, ¿qué tipos de conversaciones puedo tener?
Ben: Before we get into that connection, what kinds of conversations can I actually have?
Clara: Hay varias formas de practicar.
Clara: There are several ways to practise.
Si solo quieres hablar, puedes iniciar una conversación libre sobre algún tema que te interese.
If you simply want to talk, you can start a free conversation about something that interests you.
Si buscas más orientación, puedes usar una sesión de clase en la que el tutor presenta un tema, explica conceptos y hace preguntas.
If you want more guidance, you can use a lesson session where the tutor can introduce a topic, explain things and ask questions.
También hay una sesión centrada en el vocabulario para trabajar más directamente con las palabras y expresiones que estás aprendiendo.
There is a vocabulary-focused session for working more directly with words and expressions you're learning.
Y puedes simular situaciones que quizá enfrentes en la vida real, como viajar, pedir comida o participar en una entrevista de trabajo.
And there is roleplay for situations you might actually face, such as travelling, ordering food or taking part in a job interview.
Ben: Me gustan las simulaciones porque hay un problema claro que resolver. No tengo que quedarme pensando: «¿De qué deberían hablar hoy dos seres humanos?».
Ben: I like roleplay because there's an obvious problem to solve. I'm not sitting there thinking, "What should two humans talk about today?"
Clara: Exactamente. La situación le da un propósito a la conversación.
Clara: Exactly. The situation gives the conversation a purpose.
Imaginemos que estás aprendiendo inglés y preparas un viaje.
Let's imagine you're learning Spanish and you're preparing for a trip.
Eliges una simulación en una tienda. El tutor interpreta el papel de quien atiende y tú practicas tu parte de la interacción.
You choose a shop roleplay. The tutor takes the role of the shop assistant and you practise your side of the interaction.
Ben: ¿Y aquí es donde mi vocabulario puede empezar a entrar en juego?
Ben: And this is where my vocabulary can start coming into it?
Clara: Sí.
Clara: Yes.
La conversación puede usar palabras y expresiones seleccionadas que ya estás aprendiendo, junto con información relevante que Vocafy tiene sobre ellas.
Conversation can use selected words and expressions that you're already learning, together with some relevant information Vocafy has about them.
En una conversación normal, eso ayuda a que el vocabulario útil vuelva a aparecer de forma natural.
In a normal conversation, that can help useful vocabulary appear again naturally.
En una sesión de vocabulario, el tutor puede centrarse más directamente en las palabras que estás practicando o que te han resultado difíciles.
In a vocabulary session, the tutor can focus more directly on words you're working on or words that have been difficult for you.
Ben: Dame un ejemplo.
Ben: Give me an example.
Clara: Supongamos que has estado aprendiendo «I'm looking for», que significa «Estoy buscando».
Clara: Suppose you've been learning "Estoy buscando", meaning "I'm looking for."
La conversación podría crear de forma natural una oportunidad para usar esa expresión.
The conversation could create a natural opportunity where that expression is useful.
El tutor podría interpretar a quien atiende la tienda y preguntarte qué buscas.
The tutor might be playing a shop assistant and ask what it can help you find.
En lugar de volver a ver «I'm looking for» en una tarjeta de estudio, ahora tienes un motivo para usar esa expresión.
Now instead of seeing "Estoy buscando" on a study card again, you have a reason to produce it.
Ben: Entonces podría responder: «I'm looking for a gift for my friend».
Ben: So I might answer, "Estoy buscando un regalo para mi amigo."
Clara: Exactamente.
Clara: Exactly.
Y esa es una distinción importante.
And that's an important distinction.
No solo compruebas si reconoces la expresión. Intentas usarla para comunicar algo.
You aren't only checking whether you recognise the expression. You're trying to use it to communicate something.
Ben: ¿El tutor mete a la fuerza mi vocabulario en cada frase todo el tiempo?
Ben: Does the tutor constantly force my vocabulary into every sentence?
Clara: No, y tampoco sería conveniente.
Clara: No, and you wouldn't want that.
El objetivo no es convertir cada conversación en una prueba de vocabulario disfrazada.
The point is not to turn every conversation into a disguised vocabulary test.
En un chat normal, el vocabulario seleccionado puede retomarse cuando encaje. Si eliges específicamente practicar vocabulario, la sesión puede centrarse mucho más en lo que estás aprendiendo.
In an ordinary chat, selected vocabulary can be brought back when it fits. If you specifically choose vocabulary practice, then the session can focus much more heavily on what you're learning.
Ben: Parece una diferencia útil entre conversar sin más y estudiar de forma deliberada a través del chat.
Ben: That seems like a useful difference between just chatting and deliberately studying through chat.
Clara: Lo es. A veces quieres olvidarte de que estás estudiando y simplemente conversar.
Clara: It is. Sometimes you want to forget that you're studying and simply have a conversation.

At other times you might think, "I have these words in my vocabulary, but I never actually use them."
En ese caso, una conversación centrada en el vocabulario tiene mucho sentido.
Then a vocabulary-focused conversation makes sense.
Ben: ¿Y qué ocurre si durante la conversación necesito algo más parecido a una prueba?
Ben: And what happens if I need something more test-like during the conversation?
Clara: Vocafy también puede incorporar ejercicios directamente en el chat.
Clara: Vocafy can bring practice directly into the chat too.
Por ejemplo, puede mostrar una breve pregunta de opción múltiple para comprobar rápidamente tu vocabulario.
For example, it can show a short multiple-choice question for a quick vocabulary check.
Y, más importante aún, también puede incluir un elemento que realmente tengas pendiente de repaso.
More importantly, it can also bring in an item that is actually due for review.
Ben: Cuando dices que está pendiente de repaso, ¿te refieres a mis repasos habituales de vocabulario?
Ben: When you say actually due for review, you mean from my normal vocabulary review?
Clara: Exactamente.
Clara: Exactly.
No respondes una pregunta de práctica que solo existe dentro de esa conversación.
You're not answering a pretend question that exists only inside that conversation.
Una tarjeta de vocabulario pendiente de repaso puede aparecer en el chat. La respondes ahí y el resultado se incorpora a tu historial habitual de repasos.
A vocabulary card that is due for review can appear in the chat. You answer it there, and the result becomes part of your normal review history.
Eso significa que puede influir en cuándo debe volver a aparecer la tarjeta.
That means it can affect when the item should appear again.
Ben: Eso es bastante diferente de que una IA simplemente invente un cuestionario de vocabulario.
Ben: That's quite different from an AI simply inventing a vocabulary quiz for me.
Clara: Sí. Ambas opciones pueden ser útiles, pero son cosas diferentes.
Clara: Yes. Both can be useful, but they're different things.
Una es una pregunta generada como parte de la conversación.
One is a question generated as part of the conversation.
La otra está conectada con el vocabulario que realmente estás aprendiendo y con su historial de repasos.
The other is connected to vocabulary you're actually learning and to its review history.
Ben: Entonces la conversación puede acceder al sistema de aprendizaje.
Ben: So the conversation can reach into the learning system.
Clara: Sí, mediante las funciones que lo permiten.
Clara: In supported ways, yes.
Y la conexión también puede funcionar en la dirección contraria.
And the connection can also work in the other direction.
Ben: ¿Es decir que la conversación también puede aportar algo al sistema?
Ben: Meaning the conversation can give something back?
Clara: Exactamente.
Clara: Exactly.
Imagina que el tutor usa una frase que nunca habías visto y piensas: «Esto es útil. Quiero recordarlo».
Imagine the tutor uses a phrase you've never seen before and you think, "That's useful. I want to remember that."
La frase no tiene por qué quedarse solo en esa conversación.
Conversation doesn't have to be the end of that phrase.
Vocafy puede proponerte guardar una palabra o expresión útil junto con una frase de ejemplo.
Vocafy can offer to save a useful word or expression together with an example sentence.
Ben: ¿Automáticamente?
Ben: Automatically?
Clara: Puede proponértelo, pero tú decides si lo agregas.
Clara: It can offer it, but you decide whether to add it.
Nada pasa a formar parte de tu vocabulario personal hasta que lo apruebas.
Nothing becomes part of your personal vocabulary until you approve it.
Ben: Eso me gusta. De lo contrario, una IA demasiado entusiasta podría llenar mi vocabulario con cincuenta expresiones de una sola conversación.
Ben: I like that. Otherwise an enthusiastic AI could probably fill my vocabulary with fifty expressions from one conversation.
Clara: Precisamente.
Clara: Precisely.
El tutor puede ayudarte a detectar algo que vale la pena aprender, pero la decisión sigue siendo tuya.
The tutor can help you notice something worth learning, but you're still making the decision.
Una vez que lo apruebas, la expresión pasa a formar parte de tu vocabulario personal. Puedes gestionarla en Mis conocimientos y usarla en otras secciones de Vocafy que trabajan con el vocabulario que has guardado.
Once you approve it, that expression becomes part of your personal vocabulary. You can manage it in My Knowledge and use it in other parts of Vocafy that work with your saved vocabulary.
Ben: Entonces, en realidad, hay dos direcciones.
Ben: So there are really two directions here.
Algo que ya estoy aprendiendo puede pasar a la conversación, y algo útil de la conversación puede pasar a mi vocabulario.
Something I'm already learning can enter the conversation, and something useful from the conversation can enter my vocabulary.

And that's what makes the connection more interesting than simply putting a chatbot next to a flashcard system.

The conversation and the vocabulary don't have to remain completely separate.
Ben: Antes mencionaste que también puedo elegir cómo se comporta el tutor.
Ben: Earlier you mentioned that I can choose how the tutor behaves too.
Clara: Sí, porque no todo el mundo busca el mismo tipo de docente.
Clara: Yes, because not everyone wants the same kind of teacher.
Hay quienes quieren que se corrija cada error de inmediato. A otras personas eso les resulta agotador y prefieren terminar lo que están diciendo antes de recibir comentarios.
Some learners want every mistake corrected immediately. Others find that exhausting and would rather finish what they're saying before getting feedback.
Algunas personas prefieren respuestas breves. Otras quieren explicaciones detalladas.
Some want short responses. Others want detailed explanations.
Algunas buscan a alguien con quien conversar de manera relajada. Otras prefieren algo más parecido a un docente tradicional.
Some want a relaxed conversational partner. Others prefer something closer to a traditional teacher.
Ben: ¿Y Vocafy permite cambiar eso?
Ben: And Vocafy lets you change that?
Clara: Sí. Puedes ajustar aspectos como el grado de formalidad, el nivel de detalle de las respuestas, la forma de corregir, cuánto ánimo ofrece el tutor y cuánto humor utiliza.
Clara: Yes. You can adjust things such as formality, how detailed the responses should be, how correction works, how encouraging the tutor should be and how much humour it uses.

You can also give the tutor a stronger focus on particular areas of language learning.
Y puedes decidir cuánto debe usar en las explicaciones un idioma que ya conoces.
And you can decide how much of a language you already know should be used for explanations.
Ben: Entonces, si estoy empezando, quizá quiera recibir las explicaciones difíciles en mi propio idioma.
Ben: So as a beginner I might want difficult explanations in my own language.
Clara: Exactamente.
Clara: Exactly.
Más adelante, quizá prefieras mantener casi todo en el idioma que estás aprendiendo.
Later, you might prefer to keep almost everything in the language you're learning.
Y si no quieres configurar todo por tu cuenta, puedes comenzar con un tutor ya configurado que tenga un estilo de enseñanza específico.
And if you don't want to configure all of that yourself, you can start with a ready-made tutor that already has a particular teaching style.
Ben: Quiero volver un momento al tema de las correcciones.
Ben: I want to go back to corrections for a moment.
Uno de los problemas que tengo al conversar en otro idioma es que, si recibo una corrección después de cada frase, dejo de hablar con naturalidad.
One problem I have with language conversations is that if I'm corrected after every sentence, I stop talking naturally.
Clara: Y precisamente por eso importa la forma de corregir.
Clara: And that's precisely why correction style matters.
No existe una configuración que funcione para todo el mundo ni para todas las sesiones.
There isn't one setting that is right for everybody or for every session.
Si estás haciendo una práctica específica de gramática, quizá quieras precisamente correcciones frecuentes.
If you're doing focused grammar practice, frequent correction might be exactly what you want.
Si estás practicando cómo mantener el flujo de una conversación, demasiadas interrupciones podrían frustrar el objetivo.
If you're practising keeping a conversation going, too many interruptions might defeat the purpose.
La pregunta útil es qué quieres practicar en ese momento.
The useful question is what you're trying to practise at that moment.
Ben: Eso es bastante diferente de la idea de que existe una personalidad perfecta para un tutor de IA.
Ben: That's quite different from the idea of one perfect AI teacher personality.
Clara: Sí. Una buena interacción de aprendizaje depende en parte de la tarea y en parte de quien aprende.
Clara: Yes. A good learning interaction depends partly on the task and partly on the learner.
A veces quieres un docente.
Sometimes you want a teacher.
A veces quieres a alguien con quien conversar.
Sometimes you want a conversation partner.
A veces quieres que alguien ponga a prueba tu vocabulario.
Sometimes you want somebody to challenge you with vocabulary.
Y a veces quieres ensayar una situación específica antes de enfrentarla en la vida real.
And sometimes you want to rehearse a specific situation before it happens in real life.
Ben: ¿Qué pasa con las conversaciones? ¿Desaparecen cuando termino?
Ben: What about the conversations themselves? Do they disappear when I finish?
Clara: No. Puedes volver a conversaciones anteriores y seguir practicando más adelante.
Clara: No. You can return to earlier conversations and continue practising later.
También puedes hacer búsquedas y organizarlas, marcar como favoritas las conversaciones útiles y archivar las que ya no quieras en tu lista principal.
You can also search and organise them, mark useful conversations as favourites and archive ones you no longer want in your main list.
Ben: Parece algo sencillo, pero imagino que sería útil si tuviera una conversación para prepararme para una entrevista y otra para ensayar situaciones de viaje.
Ben: That seems simple, but I can imagine it being useful if I had one conversation preparing for an interview and another practising a trip.
Clara: Exactamente.
Clara: Exactly.
Una conversación útil no tiene por qué volverse desechable solo porque la sesión terminó.
A useful conversation doesn't have to become disposable just because the session ended.
Ben: Veamos si entendí la idea general.
Ben: Let me see if I've understood the bigger picture.
Puedo comenzar con una conversación libre, una clase más guiada, una práctica de vocabulario o una simulación.
I can start with a free conversation, a more guided lesson, vocabulary practice or a roleplay.
El tutor puede trabajar con parte del vocabulario que ya estoy aprendiendo.
The tutor can work with some vocabulary I'm already learning.
Puede aparecer dentro de la conversación un repaso de vocabulario pendiente y contar como un repaso real.
A due vocabulary review can appear inside the conversation and count as a real review.
Y si surge una expresión nueva y útil, puedo elegir agregarla a mi vocabulario.
And if a useful new expression comes up, I can choose to add it to my vocabulary.
Clara: Eso es.
Clara: That's it.
Y fíjate en lo que no estamos diciendo.
And notice what we're not saying.
La IA no tiene por qué diseñar por su cuenta todo tu plan de aprendizaje ni decidir todo lo que debes aprender a continuación.
The AI doesn't need to secretly design your entire learning plan or decide everything you should learn next.
La parte útil es mucho más concreta.
The useful part is much more concrete.
Puede conectar la conversación con partes del proceso de aprendizaje que, de otro modo, permanecerían separadas.
It can connect conversation with parts of the learning process that would otherwise sit in separate places.
Ben: Eso encaja con algo que ya hemos comentado en este pódcast.
Ben: Which fits something we've talked about before on this podcast.
Aprender una palabra no consiste solo en verla suficientes veces. Con el tiempo, quieres entenderla cuando aparece y poder usarla cuando la necesitas.
Learning a word isn't just seeing it enough times. Eventually you want to understand it when it appears and be able to use it when you need it.
Clara: Exactamente.
Clara: Exactly.
La práctica de recuperación puede ayudar a aprender vocabulario, pero aprender un idioma no es solo una prueba de memoria. También necesitas oportunidades para usar lo que sabes con un propósito.
Retrieval practice can help vocabulary learning, but language isn't only a memory test. You also need opportunities to use what you know for a purpose.
La conversación te ofrece una de esas oportunidades.
Conversation gives you one of those opportunities.
Ben: Entonces, si alguien abre el tutor por primera vez, ¿qué le recomendarías?
Ben: So if somebody opens the tutor for the first time, what would you suggest?
Clara: Empieza con un propósito real.
Clara: Start with a real purpose.
No te limites a escribir «enséñame inglés».
Don't just type "teach me Spanish."
Elige un tema del que realmente quieras hablar o una situación que de verdad puedas enfrentar.
Choose something you actually want to talk about or a situation you might genuinely encounter.
Si ya estás aprendiendo vocabulario, prueba una sesión específica y busca oportunidades para usar esas expresiones en lugar de limitarte a reconocerlas.
If you have vocabulary you're already learning, try a vocabulary session and give yourself opportunities to use those expressions rather than only recognise them.
Y cuando la conversación produzca una frase que realmente quieras recordar, guárdala.
And when the conversation produces a phrase that you genuinely want to remember, save it.
Ben: ¿Algo más?
Ben: Anything else?
Clara: Presta atención a las correcciones, en lugar de verlas como interrupciones.
Clara: Pay attention to corrections instead of treating them as interruptions.

The goal isn't to have a flawless chat.

The mistakes are often where the useful practice is.
Ben: Eso se parece mucho menos a hablar con un docente de IA omnisciente y mucho más a usar la conversación como otro entorno de aprendizaje.
Ben: That sounds much less like talking to an all-knowing AI teacher and much more like using conversation as another learning environment.
Clara: Exactamente.
Clara: Exactly.
La IA puede facilitar mucho el acceso a la conversación.
AI can make conversation much easier to access.
Pero lo interesante de Vocafy es lo que ocurre cuando esa conversación no está aislada.
But the interesting part in Vocafy is what happens when that conversation is not isolated.
Las palabras que estás aprendiendo pueden entrar en el chat. Ahí puedes hacer repasos reales. Y las expresiones útiles de la conversación pueden incorporarse a tu vocabulario.
Words you're learning can come into the chat. Real review can happen there. Useful language from the conversation can go back into your vocabulary.
La conversación se convierte en otro espacio donde tu aprendizaje puede continuar.
The conversation becomes another place where your learning can continue.
Ben: Y quizá esa sea la verdadera diferencia.
Ben: And maybe that's the real difference.
El chat no es el destino. Es parte del sistema.
The chat isn't the destination. It's part of the system.

Clara: That's a good way to put it.
