Alice sat on the grass next to her sister. Alice was very bored because she had nothing to do. Alice looked at her sister’s book, but it had no pictures. Alice thought, "A book is not good without pictures."

The day was very hot. Alice felt sleepy and she did not want to move. Suddenly, a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran past Alice. This was a strange thing to see.

The White Rabbit took a watch out of its waistcoat (a small jacket without sleeves) pocket. The White Rabbit looked at the watch and said, "Oh dear! I am late!" Alice was very surprised because she never saw a rabbit with a watch.

Alice jumped up and ran after the White Rabbit. The White Rabbit ran across a field and jumped into a large hole. Alice jumped into the hole after the White Rabbit. Alice did not think about how she could get out again.

The hole was like a long tunnel (a passage under the ground). Suddenly, the hole went down. Alice began to fall down a very deep well. She fell very slowly, so she had time to look around.

Alice saw cupboards and book-shelves on the walls. She saw maps and pictures on the walls too. Alice took a jar from a shelf. The jar said marmalade (a sweet food made from oranges), but it was empty.

Alice put the jar into another cupboard as she fell. Alice thought, "After this fall, I will not be afraid to fall down the stairs! Everyone at home will think I am very brave." Alice fell down for a long time.

Alice wondered how far she fell. Alice thought she was near the center of the Earth. Alice thought about her cat, Dinah. Alice hoped the people at home remembered to give Dinah her milk.

Alice felt very sleepy. Alice started to dream about Dinah. Suddenly, thump! Alice landed on a pile of dry sticks and leaves. The fall was over.

Alice was not hurt and she jumped up. Alice saw the White Rabbit again. The White Rabbit was running down another long passage. The White Rabbit said, "Oh, I am very late!"

Alice ran after the White Rabbit like the wind. The White Rabbit turned a corner and disappeared. Alice was now in a long hall with many lamps on the roof. Alice tried to open the doors, but they were all locked.

Alice walked sadly down the middle of the hall. Then, Alice saw a small table made of glass. On the table was a tiny golden key. Alice tried to use the key on the doors, but it did not work.

Then Alice saw a curtain. Behind the curtain was a very small door. The door was only fifteen inches high. Alice used the golden key and the door opened.

Alice looked through the door. She saw a beautiful garden with bright flowers and fountains (structures that send water into the air). Alice wanted to go into the garden. But Alice was too big to go through the door.

Alice went back to the glass table. She found a small bottle on it. A paper label on the bottle said "DRINK ME." Alice was a wise girl and she did not drink it quickly.

Alice looked for the word poison (something that can kill you if you drink it). The bottle did not say "poison," so Alice drank some. It tasted very good. Alice started to shrink (become smaller).

Now Alice was only ten inches tall. Alice was happy because she was the right size for the small door. Alice went to the door, but she forgot the golden key on the table. Alice was now too small to reach the key.

Alice tried to climb the table leg, but it was too slippery. Alice sat down and cried. Then Alice told herself, "Stop crying! It is no use!" Alice was a very brave child.

Alice saw a small glass box under the table. Inside the box was a very small cake. The cake had the words "EAT ME" on it. Alice said, "I will eat the cake."

Alice thought, "If I grow big, I can reach the key. If I grow small, I can crawl under the door." Alice ate a little bit of the cake. Then Alice finished the whole cake. Version six.
