A king and queen finally had a baby girl after many years. They were so happy that they held a great feast. They invited twelve fairies to give the child special gifts like beauty, kindness, and wealth. However, there were thirteen fairies in the kingdom, and because the king only had twelve golden plates, he didn't invite the last one.
At the end of the feast, the thirteen fairy arrived, angry and seeking revenge. She cried, "When the princess is fifteen, she will prick her finger on a spindle and die!" The twelfth fairy, who hadn't given her gift yet, said, "She will not die, but she will sleep for a hundred years."
The king ordered all spindles in the kingdom to be burned to protect his daughter. The princess grew up to be beautiful and kind. On her fifteenth birthday, while her parents were away, she explored the castle and found an old tower. Inside, an old woman was spinning. The princess tried to help, but as soon as she touched the spindle, she pricked her finger and fell into a deep sleep.
At that moment, everyone in the palace fell asleep too—the king, the queen, the guards, the horses, and even the flies on the wall. A thick hedge of thorns grew around the castle until it was completely hidden.
Many princes tried to break through the thorns to find the legendary "Briar Rose," but they all got stuck and died. After a hundred years, a new prince arrived. On that day, the thorns turned into beautiful flowers, and the path opened for him.
He entered the silent castle and found the princess in the tower. She looked so beautiful that he kissed her. Immediately, she woke up and smiled. Everyone else in the palace woke up too. The horses shook themselves, the dogs barked, and the fire in the kitchen began to burn again. The prince and Briar Rose were married, and they lived happily ever after.
