Ben: Boas-vindas ao Vocafy por Dentro. Sou o Ben e hoje tenho a Clara comigo para falar das ideias por detrás da Vocafy. Clara, há uma situação que conheço bem: vejo uma palavra em espanhol e sei o que significa. Depois, quando preciso dela, não me consigo lembrar. Será que cheguei mesmo a aprendê-la?

Ben: Welcome to Vocafy Unpacked. I'm Ben, and today I'm joined by Clara to talk about the thinking behind Vocafy. Clara, here's something familiar: I see a word in Spanish and know what it means. Then, when I need it, I can't remember it. Did I actually learn it?

Clara: Aprendeste alguma coisa sobre ela. Reconhecer uma palavra, recordá-la sem pistas, compreendê-la quando alguém a diz e usá-la são desafios diferentes. Podes ter facilidade numa destas tarefas e ainda precisar de praticar outra.

Clara: You've learned something about it. Recognising a word, remembering it without a hint, understanding it when someone says it, and using it yourself are different demands. You can be comfortable with one and still need practice with another.

Ben: Portanto, reconhecê-la já é um progresso, mas ainda há outros aspetos a trabalhar.

Ben: So recognising it is progress, but there's more to work on.

Clara: Exatamente. E essa é uma das razões pelas quais a Vocafy interliga diferentes tipos de prática. Uma expressão útil pode fazer parte de algo que lês, revês, ouves e usas.

Clara: Exactly. And that's one reason Vocafy connects different kinds of practice. A useful expression can be part of something you read, something you review, something you listen to, and something you use yourself.

Ben: Qual é o ponto de partida? Devo seguir um curso?

Ben: What's the starting point? Do I follow a course?

Clara: Podes seguir aulas se quiseres mais orientação. Mas também podes começar por algo que queiras compreender ou fazer. Cria materiais adaptados ao teu nível, adiciona algo que já tenhas ou escolhe entre os conteúdos disponíveis.

Clara: You can follow lessons if you want more guidance. But you can also start with something you want to understand or do. Create material for your level, bring something you already have, or choose from the available content.

Ben: Vamos tornar isso concreto. Estou a aprender espanhol e a planear uma viagem. Por onde posso começar?

Ben: Let's make that concrete. I'm learning Spanish, and I'm planning a trip. Where could I begin?

Clara: You could start by asking Vocafy to create a vocabulary set for your trip, with useful words, common phrases and example sentences. These collections are called Voca sets. You can listen to them while travelling or in your free time, choosing which language comes first, how often each item repeats, and how much time you have between them. Or you could generate a short reading about arriving in a new city, or a story with several chapters, at a level that suits you. A simple prompt can be enough to get started.

Ben: E se já tiver encontrado um vídeo de viagens que queira ver?

Ben: And if I've already found a travel video I want to watch?

Clara: Podes importar vídeos do YouTube através da extensão para o navegador e usar as respetivas legendas. Também podes importar um artigo ou um texto teu, ou escolher um livro, vídeo ou música que já esteja disponível na Vocafy.

Clara: You can bring in YouTube videos through the browser extension and work with their subtitles. You can also bring in an article or your own text, or choose a book, video or song already in Vocafy.

Ben: O material tem de ser sobre algo que me apaixone?

Ben: Does the material have to be something I'm passionate about?

Clara: Não. Ser útil também é um bom motivo. Pode tratar-se de um documento de trabalho, de um tema do teu curso ou de uma situação que esperas enfrentar. A ideia é dar-te um motivo para prestar atenção ao significado daquilo que lês ou ouves.

Clara: No. Useful is a good reason too. It might be a work document, a topic from your course, or a situation you expect to face. The idea is to give yourself a reason to pay attention to what the language means.

Ben: Certo. Estou a ler a minha história de viagem e encontro uma expressão que quero memorizar. O que acontece a seguir?

Ben: All right. I'm reading my travel story, and I find an expression I want to remember. What happens?

Clara: Selecionas a expressão, confirmas o significado e guardas essa expressão no teu vocabulário. Se houver uma frase no material de origem, esta fica associada à expressão, para poderes voltar a encontrá-la em contexto.

Clara: You select it, check its meaning, and save it to your vocabulary. Where a source sentence is available, that stays with it, so you can return to the expression in context.

Ben: Em vez de voltar a olhar para ela amanhã e perguntar-me porque é que a guardei.

Ben: Rather than looking at it tomorrow and wondering why I saved it.

Clara: Exato. E, se surgir noutro texto compatível, o realce pode indicar que já faz parte do teu vocabulário — quer ainda a estejas a aprender, quer já a tenhas marcado como conhecida.

Clara: Right. And if it appears in another supported text, the highlighting can show that it's already part of your vocabulary—whether you're learning it or have marked it as known.

Ben: É a isso que chamas Memória de Aprendizagem?

Ben: Is that what you mean by Learning Memory?

Clara: Em parte. A Memória de Aprendizagem acompanha o vocabulário que guardaste, o respetivo contexto, os teus estados de aprendizagem e o histórico de prática associado. Assim, as diferentes áreas da Vocafy dispõem de um registo comum que podem usar.

Clara: That's part of it. Learning Memory keeps track of your saved vocabulary, its context, your learning states and related practice history. It gives different parts of Vocafy a shared record to work with.

Ben: Consegue avaliar até que ponto sei usar cada palavra?

Ben: Does it know how well I can use every word?

Clara: Não totalmente. Uma palavra guardada ou uma revisão bem-sucedida não contam a história toda. Neste momento, a principal função da Memória é interligar o teu vocabulário e o teu histórico de aprendizagem. A capacidade de distinguir melhor as diferentes formas de conhecer e usar uma palavra continua a ser desenvolvida.

Clara: Not completely. A saved word or a successful review doesn't tell the whole story. Today, it mainly connects your vocabulary and learning history. Understanding more about the different ways you know and use a word is something being developed further.

Ben: Então, já guardei a expressão. Como posso praticar para me lembrar dela?

Ben: So I've saved my expression. How do I work on remembering it?

Clara: Podes voltar a ela através da revisão espaçada, com vários tipos de tarefas. Uma tarefa pode pedir-te que recordes a expressão, escrevas uma resposta, completes uma frase ou pratiques a compreensão oral. Por vezes, reconheces a resposta com facilidade; teres de a produzir sem ajuda pode exigir mais esforço.

Clara: You can return to it through spaced review, with different kinds of tasks. You might recall the expression, type an answer, complete a sentence or practise listening. Sometimes you'll recognise the answer easily; having to produce it yourself may take more effort.

Ben: E quando não me apetece parar para responder a perguntas?

Ben: And what about times when I don't want to sit and answer questions?

Clara: Podes ouvir as tuas coleções, como o conjunto de viagem de que falámos no início. À medida que adicionas expressões úteis que encontras nas tuas leituras ou noutras atividades, também as podes incluir nessas coleções. Assim, aquilo que descobres hoje pode fazer parte do que ouves amanhã.

Clara: You can listen to your collections, just like that travel set we started with. As you add useful expressions from your reading or other activities, you can include those too. So what you discover today can become part of what you listen to tomorrow.

Ben: E onde entra o tutor de IA?

Ben: Where does the AI tutor come in?

Clara: Podes ter uma conversa, pedir uma explicação, praticar vocabulário ou explorar uma situação passo a passo. Para a tua viagem, podes praticar como fazer o check-in num hotel ou como pedir informações sobre um bilhete de comboio.

Clara: You can have a conversation, ask for an explanation, practise vocabulary or work through a situation. For your trip, you might practise checking into a hotel or asking about a train ticket.

Ben: O tutor relaciona a conversa com o que tenho aprendido?

Ben: Does the tutor connect to what I've been learning?

Clara: Pode aceder às partes relevantes do teu vocabulário e do teu histórico de aprendizagem, por isso as expressões que estás a praticar podem fazer parte dos exercícios. Também pode recorrer a ferramentas como um questionário ou uma revisão, ou sugerir que guardes uma nova expressão que surja na conversa.

Clara: It can access relevant parts of your vocabulary and learning history, so expressions you're working on can come into the practice. It can also bring in tools such as a quiz or review, or offer to save a new expression that comes up.

Ben: Tenho de manter a conversa centrada nas palavras que guardei?

Ben: Do I have to keep the conversation focused on my saved words?

Clara: Não. Podes deixar que a conversa siga o rumo que te for mais útil. Essa ligação existe para te apoiar, e podes ajustar a forma como o tutor explica os temas e te corrige.

Clara: No. You can follow the conversation wherever it's useful. The connection is there to support you, and you can adjust how the tutor explains things and corrects you.

Ben: E se compreender uma expressão, mas tiver dificuldade em pronunciá-la?

Ben: What if I understand an expression but struggle to pronounce it?

Clara: Há uma área separada para a prática da pronúncia. Podes trabalhar com palavras que estás a aprender ou com uma coleção de vocabulário, gravar a tua voz, ouvir a gravação e receber feedback. Assim, podes dedicar toda a atenção à forma como dizes algo em voz alta.

Clara: There's a separate pronunciation practice area. You can work with words you're learning or a vocabulary collection, record yourself, listen back and get feedback. That gives you a focused way to work on saying something aloud.

Ben: Falámos da leitura, da revisão, da compreensão oral, do tutor e da pronúncia. É essa a sequência que devo seguir?

Ben: We've talked about reading, review, listening, the tutor and pronunciation. Is that a sequence I'm supposed to follow?

Clara: Não, e também não precisas de usar tudo. Num dia, podes ler algo e guardar duas expressões úteis. Noutro, podes fazer uma revisão, seguir uma aula ou usar o corretor gramatical. A ideia é que estas atividades se possam interligar através daquilo que estás a aprender.

Clara: No, and you don't need to use everything. You might read something and save two useful phrases. Another day, you might review, follow a lesson or use the grammar checker. The point is that these activities can connect through what you're learning.

Ben: Então, qual seria um primeiro passo sensato?

Ben: So what's a sensible first step?

Clara: Escolhe um pequeno objetivo: algo que gostarias de compreender ou conseguir expressar. Cria ou abre algum material relacionado com esse objetivo, guarda o que te for útil e volta a esse material. Dá-te oportunidades tanto para compreenderes a língua como para a usares.

Clara: Choose one small thing you'd like to understand or be able to express. Create or open some material around it, save what's useful, and come back to it. Give yourself opportunities both to understand the language and to use it.

Ben: E essas oportunidades podem reforçar-se entre si.

Ben: And those opportunities can build on each other.

Clara: Exatamente. Essa é a ideia por detrás da Vocafy: manter contigo expressões úteis e o respetivo contexto enquanto continuas a aprender.

Clara: Exactly. That's the thinking behind Vocafy: keeping useful language and its context with you as you continue learning.

Ben: Clara, obrigado. E obrigado também a quem nos ouve. Podes explorar a Vocafy em vocafy.net. Até ao próximo episódio de Vocafy por Dentro.
