Later, Huckleberry Finn and Jim woke up. They looked at the things the gang stole from the wreck (a broken, sinking boat). They found boots, blankets, and clothes. They also found many books and a spyglass (a small telescope used to see things far away). They found three boxes of cigars. Huckleberry Finn and Jim felt very rich.
The cigars were very good. Huckleberry Finn and Jim stayed in the woods all afternoon. Huckleberry Finn read the books and they had a good time. Huckleberry Finn told Jim about the ferry-boat. He said these things were adventures.
Jim did not want more adventures. He told Huckleberry Finn about his fear on the boat. Jim thought he would die when the raft moved away. He was afraid of drowning. He was also afraid of being caught.
If people caught Jim, they would send him back to Miss Watson. Then Miss Watson would sell him to the South. Huckleberry Finn thought Jim was right. Jim was a very smart man.
Huckleberry Finn read to Jim about kings and dukes. He told Jim that kings wore beautiful clothes. They were very rich. They did not have to work. Jim was very interested.
Jim asked how much money a king made. Huckleberry Finn said they could have all the money they wanted. Jim thought that was great. Huckleberry Finn said kings just sat around all day. Sometimes they went to war.
Sometimes kings talked to their parliament (a group of people who make laws for a country). Huckleberry Finn told Jim about a harem (a place where a king keeps many wives). He said King Solomon had a million wives.
Jim did not think this was wise. Jim thought a house with many wives would be very noisy. He said the wives would argue all the time. Jim did not think Solomon was a wise man.
Jim talked about the story of the baby. Huckleberry Finn already knew the story. In the story, Solomon wanted to cut a baby into two pieces. He wanted to give half to one woman and half to the other woman.
Jim said this was a bad idea. He said a half of a baby was not useful. He thought Solomon should ask the neighbors who the baby belonged to. Jim thought Solomon was not smart.
Huckleberry Finn said Jim did not understand the point of the story. But Jim thought he was right. Jim said Solomon had too many children. He said Solomon did not care about one child because he had so many.
Huckleberry Finn talked about other kings. He told Jim about King Louis Sixteenth from France. He said the king had a son called the Dauphin (the title for the son of a French king). Huckleberry Finn said the son might be in America now.
Jim asked if there were kings in America. Huckleberry Finn said no. Jim asked what the son would do for a job. Huckleberry Finn said he might teach people to speak French.
Jim asked if French people spoke like them. Huckleberry Finn said no. He said Jim could not understand a Frenchman. Jim thought this was strange. Huckleberry Finn tried to explain.
Huckleberry Finn asked Jim a question. He asked if a cat talked like a man. Jim said no. Huckleberry Finn asked if a cow talked like a man. Jim said no.
Huckleberry Finn said it was natural for a cat and a cow to talk differently. Jim agreed. Then Huckleberry Finn asked why it was not natural for a Frenchman to talk differently.
Jim had an answer. He said a Frenchman was a man. He said a man must talk like a man. Huckleberry Finn saw that he could not win the argument. He stopped talking.
