The Time Traveler felt sick and confused. Time travel was very difficult for his body. The Time Traveler did not sit correctly on the seat. He sat on the side of the machine. The machine shook very hard. The Time Traveler held the machine tightly. He did not look at the world around him.
Later, the Time Traveler looked at the dials (small clocks that show numbers). One dial showed days. Another dial showed thousands of days. Another dial showed millions of days. The Time Traveler made a mistake with the levers. He pulled the levers the wrong way. The machine went into the far future. The hands on the dials moved very fast. They moved as fast as the hands on a watch.
The world changed as the Time Traveler moved forward. The grey sky became darker. At first, the days and nights were very fast. Then, they became slow. The sun moved across the sky slowly. Soon, one day lasted for many years. Finally, there was only a steady twilight (the soft light in the sky when the sun is below the horizon).
The sun did not set anymore. It stayed in the west. The sun was very large and red. The moon was gone. The stars moved very slowly in the sky. Finally, the sun stopped moving. It stayed on the horizon (the line where the earth meets the sky). It looked like a giant red dome. Sometimes the sun was bright. Sometimes the sun was dark.
The Earth stopped moving. One side of the Earth always faced the sun. This happens to the moon and the Earth today. The Time Traveler moved the levers slowly. He did not want to fall. The dials stopped moving. The Time Traveler saw a lonely beach. He stopped the Time Machine and looked around.
The sky was not blue. One part of the sky was black. The Time Traveler saw bright white stars there. Another part of the sky was deep red. There were no stars in the red part. The huge sun was red and silent. The rocks were also red. The Time Traveler saw green plants on the rocks. The plants looked like the green moss in a forest.
The Time Machine stood on a beach. The sea was to the south-west. The water was very flat. There was no wind. The water moved very quietly. There was pink salt on the edge of the water. The Time Traveler felt a pain in his head. He breathed very fast. The air was thin. It felt like the air on a high mountain.
The Time Traveler heard a loud scream. He saw a large white thing in the sky. It looked like a giant butterfly. The creature flew over a small hill and disappeared. The sound of the creature was very sad. The Time Traveler felt cold because he was afraid. He sat more firmly on the Time Machine.
The Time Traveler looked at the red rocks. One rock moved toward the Time Traveler. The rock was actually a monster. It was a giant crab (a sea animal with a hard shell and many legs). This crab was as big as a table. It had many legs and big claws.
The crab had long antennae (long, thin parts on a creature's head used for feeling). The antennae moved like whips. The monster had eyes on long stalks. Its mouth moved constantly. The crab was very ugly and scary.
The Time Traveler looked at the monster. Suddenly, he felt something on his face. He thought it was a fly. He tried to push it away with his hand. Then something touched his ear. The Time Traveler grabbed a thin, long string. The string pulled away from his hand.
The Time Traveler turned around. He saw another giant crab behind him. Its eyes moved and it was hungry. Its big claws moved toward the Time Traveler. The claws were covered in green slime.
The Time Traveler put his hand on the lever. He moved forward one month in time. He was still on the same beach. He saw many giant crabs now. The crabs walked everywhere on the green plants. The light was dark and the world was sad.
The world felt very lonely. The sky was red and black. The sea was salty and dead. The monsters walked on the rocks. The air hurt the Time Traveler's lungs. The Time Traveler moved forward one hundred years. He saw the same red sun. He saw the same cold air. The giant crabs were still there.
The Time Traveler traveled across many thousands of years. He wanted to see the end of the Earth. The sun became larger and darker. Life on Earth was disappearing. Finally, the Time Traveler was 30 million years in the future. The sun was huge and red. It covered a large part of the sky.
The Time Traveler stopped the machine again. The giant crabs were gone. The beach was empty. Only small green plants lived on the rocks. The Time Traveler saw white spots on the ground. It was very cold. Snow started to fall.
The Time Traveler saw white snow on the hills. There was ice on the edge of the sea. The sea looked like blood under the red sun. The Time Traveler looked for animals. He stayed on the Time Machine because he was afraid. He saw nothing moving on the land or in the sea.
Only the green plants on the rocks were alive. The water moved away from the beach. The Time Traveler saw a black object on the sand. It moved a little. Then it stopped. The Time Traveler thought it was only a rock. The stars were very bright in the sky.
Suddenly, the shape of the sun changed. A black shadow appeared on the sun. The shadow grew larger. The Time Traveler watched the blackness. He realized it was an eclipse (when a planet or moon moves in front of the sun). A planet moved between the Earth and the sun.
The darkness grew quickly. A cold wind blew from the east. More snow fell from the sky. The sea made a soft sound. The rest of the world was silent. There were no people or sheep. There were no birds or insects.
The hills disappeared into the black night. The wind made a sad sound. Then the Time Traveler saw only the stars. The sky was completely black. The Time Traveler was very afraid of the darkness.
The Time Traveler felt a lot of pain when he breathed. He felt very sick. Then the edge of the sun appeared again. It looked like a red light in the sky. The Time Traveler got off the machine to rest. He felt confused.
The Time Traveler saw the black object on the sand again. It was a moving thing. It was a round animal. It was the size of a football. It had many tentacles (long, thin arms). The animal hopped on the red beach. The Time Traveler felt very weak. He climbed onto the Time Machine. He wanted to go home.
