The train arrived in Calcutta. Mr. Fogg wanted to take Aouda straight to the ship to keep her safe. But as they left the station, a policeman stopped them and ordered them to follow him. Fogg did not argue. He simply obeyed the law. They were taken to a police station and locked inside a room with barred windows.

Aouda felt terrible. She was sure they were arrested because they had saved her life. Fogg calmly told her there was a mistake and confidently promised that they would all be on their ship by noon.

Soon, they were brought into a courtroom before a judge. Three Indian priests entered the room. Passepartout smiled, assuming these were the dangerous men who had tried to burn Aouda. When the judge read the accusation, Fogg proudly admitted to it, but demanded to know what the priests had planned to do to the young woman.

The judge was completely confused. He explained that this case had nothing to do with saving a woman. These priests were from Bombay! The clerk then placed a pair of shoes on the desk. "My shoes!" Passepartout cried out in surprise.

It was a trap. Detective Fix, who was secretly watching from the back of the room, had paid the Bombay priests to travel to Calcutta. He hoped the judge would lock Fogg in prison long enough for his official police warrant to finally arrive from London.

Because of Passepartout's foolish outburst, the judge declared them both guilty. He sentenced Passepartout to fifteen days in prison and a fine. Because Fogg was legally responsible for his servant, he was sentenced to a week in prison. Fix smiled. His plan had worked!

However, Fogg remained completely calm. He simply stood up and offered to pay bail to avoid prison. The judge agreed, demanding an enormous sum of two thousand pounds to let them go free. Without a single word of complaint, Fogg opened his bag, pulled out a thick roll of banknotes, and paid the huge amount in cash.

Passepartout angrily grabbed his shoes, complaining that they were the most expensive shoes in the world. The group immediately left the court and hurried to the harbor.

By eleven o'clock, they were safely boarding their ship. Detective Fix stood on the dock, stamping his feet in extreme disappointment. He realized Fogg was spending thousands of pounds of the stolen money on bribes, court fees, and elephants. "I will follow him to the end of the world!" Fix promised himself, worried that the bank's money would soon be completely empty.
