On November 7th, the ship Carnatic sailed from Hong Kong towards Japan. Two cabins in the back remained empty. They were the ones booked by Phileas Fogg.
The next day, a man with messy hair and tired eyes stepped out onto the deck of the ship. It was Passepartout.
Back in Hong Kong, three hours after the detective Fix left the drug den, Passepartout had slowly woken up. His mind was cloudy, but he remembered his duty. He ran from the building and stumbled through the busy streets. He shouted the ship's name like a madman. He ran onto the wooden plank just as the ship started moving, fell down, and passed out. Sailors carried him below. He did not wake up again until they were far out at sea.
Now, the fresh sea air finally cleared his head. He remembered the detective’s trick.
"At least I didn't miss the ship," he told himself. He decided to find Mr. Fogg and apologize for his bad behavior. He looked around, but he could not see his master or Aouda anywhere. He went downstairs and asked a ship officer for Mr. Fogg's cabin number.
"There is no passenger by the name of Fogg," the officer said.
Passepartout looked at the passenger list. His master's name was not on it. A terrible thought suddenly hit him.
"Am I on the Carnatic?" he asked.
"Yes," the officer replied. "We are on our way to Yokohama."
Passepartout fell into a chair. He finally understood everything. He had forgotten to tell Mr. Fogg that the ship was leaving early! It was his fault they missed it. But it was also Fix's fault. The detective got him drunk on purpose to keep Mr. Fogg in Hong Kong. Because of this dirty trick, Mr. Fogg was completely ruined and would surely lose his bet.
After his initial shock, Passepartout tried to stay calm. His situation was terrible. He was heading to Japan, but he did not have a single penny in his pocket. Luckily, his ticket was already paid for. During the rest of the trip, he ate huge meals every day. He needed to build his strength to survive in a new country.
On November 13th, the Carnatic arrived in Yokohama. Passepartout walked off the ship and began to wander aimlessly through the city. First, he walked through the European area, filled with foreign merchants buying and selling goods. He felt completely alone. He could have asked the French or English consuls for help, but he felt too embarrassed to explain his master's strange situation.
Instead, he walked into the native Japanese quarter. The streets were beautiful and crowded. He saw police officers carrying two swords, soldiers in blue uniforms, and priests beating small drums. He looked at the strange carriages and the local women walking gracefully in wooden sandals.
Passepartout walked for hours, looking into tea shops and bright restaurants. Soon, he reached the quiet rice fields outside the city, where he saw colorful flowers and big birds sitting in the cedar trees.
By evening, his stomach was painfully empty. He checked the street markets, but he could not find any cheap food. He knew the local people mostly ate fish and rice, and they rarely killed cows for meat. With no money to buy anything anyway, he decided to sleep outside and wait for morning.
When night fell, the streets lit up with colorful paper lanterns. Passepartout walked down to the dark harbor, trying to keep his spirits up while he waited for a new day to begin.
