Two or three weeks later, Jerry Barker came home late. Polly Barker ran to meet him with a light. She was very happy. She said that Mrs. Briggs wanted Jerry Barker’s cab again. Mrs. Briggs tried other cabs, but she did not like them. She said Jerry Barker’s cab was the cleanest.

Mrs. Briggs used the cab often after that. But she never asked Jerry Barker to work on Sundays. Then, one Sunday, something happened. A woman named Dinah Brown got a letter. Her mother was very sick. Dinah Brown had to go to the country immediately.

The journey was ten miles away. Dinah Brown was very weak. She had a new baby. She could not walk four miles from the train station. She asked Jerry Barker to take her in his cab. She promised to pay him later.

Jerry Barker was very tired. I was tired too. We wanted to rest on Sunday. But Jerry Barker wanted to help the woman. Polly Barker said they should treat others kindly. She said helping a sick mother was a good thing to do.

Jerry Barker borrowed a trap (a light carriage with two wheels) from a friend. This carriage was very light. We started the journey at ten o'clock. The weather was beautiful. I liked the fresh air and the green grass of the country.

We reached a small farm. A young man led me to a meadow. Jerry Barker took off my harness. I was free! I ate the grass and ran around the field. It was a wonderful treat for me.

Jerry Barker sat under a tree. He listened to the birds and read his book. He looked very happy. We went home in the afternoon. Jerry Barker said he did not lose his Sunday. He enjoyed the day in the country.
