Jonathan Harker went to Bethnal Green to find a man named Thomas Snelling. But Thomas Snelling was very drunk. He drank too much beer because he was happy about Jonathan Harker’s visit. Jonathan Harker spoke to the man's wife instead. She was a kind, poor woman. She told Jonathan Harker about a man named Joseph Smollet. Joseph Smollet was the boss of the work.
Jonathan Harker drove to Walworth. He found Joseph Smollet at his house. Joseph Smollet was an honest and smart worker. He remembered the boxes from the house at Carfax. Joseph Smollet took a small notebook (a book used for writing notes) out of his pocket. The book was old and dirty. He showed Jonathan Harker where he took the boxes.
Joseph Smollet moved twelve boxes from Carfax. He took six boxes to a house in Chicksand Street. He took the other six boxes to Jamaica Lane. Jonathan Harker thought about Count Dracula’s plan. The Count wanted to put these boxes all over London. He chose the north, the south, and the east. Jonathan Harker was sure the Count also had boxes in the west.
Jonathan Harker gave Joseph Smollet some money. Joseph Smollet was very happy. He told Jonathan Harker about another man named Sam Bloxam. Sam Bloxam also moved some boxes from the house at Carfax. Joseph Smollet did not know where Sam Bloxam lived. But Joseph Smollet promised to find the address. He told Jonathan Harker to go home.
Jonathan Harker went back to Dr. Seward’s house. He felt very tired. He saw Mina Harker. Mina Harker was asleep, but she looked very pale. Her eyes looked like she was crying. Jonathan Harker felt sad. He did not tell Mina Harker about his work. He wanted to keep her safe. The doctors said Mina Harker must stay out of this dangerous business.
2 October, evening.
Jonathan Harker had a very busy day. In the morning, he received a letter from Joseph Smollet. The letter had the address for Sam Bloxam. Jonathan Harker did not wake Mina Harker. She looked sick and tired. Jonathan Harker decided to send Mina Harker back to her home in Exeter soon. He thought she would be happier there.
Jonathan Harker drove to Walworth. He found the building where Sam Bloxam stayed. He asked for the deputy (the person in charge of a building). The deputy told Jonathan Harker that Sam Bloxam was at work. Sam Bloxam worked at a "cold storage" building in Poplar. A cold storage building is a large, cold warehouse (a building for keeping things).
Jonathan Harker found Sam Bloxam at the warehouse. He gave Sam Bloxam some money for information. Sam Bloxam said he moved nine boxes from Carfax. He took the boxes to a big house in Piccadilly. Sam Bloxam said an old man helped him. The old man was very strong. He had a white moustache (hair above the lip) and very pale skin.
The old man moved the heavy boxes easily. Jonathan Harker knew this man was Count Dracula. The Count was in the house in Piccadilly. Jonathan Harker went to see the house. It was a big house with a stone front. It looked very old and dirty. The windows were covered in dust. There was a sign on the house before, but now the sign was gone.
Jonathan Harker went to see the agents (people who sell or rent houses). The agents were named Mitchell, Sons, and Candy. Jonathan Harker met a man at the office. The man was polite, but he did not want to talk. He said the house was already sold. Jonathan Harker used the name of Lord Godalming. Then the man became more helpful. He promised to write a letter to Lord Godalming.
Jonathan Harker went back to Dr. Seward’s house. He told the other men about the house in Piccadilly. Van Helsing was happy. He said they were close to the end of their work. But Quincey Morris was worried. It was difficult to break into a house in a busy street like Piccadilly. They decided to wait for the letter from the agents.
Dr. Seward’s Diary.
1 October.
Dr. Seward was confused about his patient, Renfield. Renfield changed his mood very often. In the morning, Renfield acted like a king. He did not care about flies or spiders anymore. He said he did not want to eat souls. He said he only wanted "life." Renfield said he was like a man from the Bible named Enoch because he "walked with God."
Later, Dr. Seward visited Renfield again. Renfield sat on a stool in the middle of the room. He asked Dr. Seward about souls. Renfield said, "I do not want any souls!" He looked very worried. Dr. Seward asked him how he could have life without a soul. Renfield became very angry. He shouted at Dr. Seward.
Renfield did not want the souls of flies or spiders to be near him. He was afraid of them. But then he became calm again. He asked Dr. Seward for forgiveness. Dr. Seward thought about Renfield’s words. Renfield was not interested in small animals now. He wanted "human life." Dr. Seward was afraid. He thought Count Dracula was visiting Renfield.
Letter from Mitchell, Sons, and Candy to Lord Godalming.
1 October.
The agents wrote to Lord Godalming. They gave him information about the house in Piccadilly. They said a man named Count de Ville bought the house. He paid for the house with paper money. They did not know anything else about the Count.
Dr. Seward’s Diary.
2 October.
Last night, Dr. Seward told a man to watch Renfield. The man said Renfield was quiet, but he prayed loudly at midnight. Today, Jonathan Harker was out looking for clues. Lord Godalming and Quincey Morris were getting horses. Van Helsing went to a museum to study old books. They wanted to find a way to destroy the Count.
In the evening, the men talked together. Mina Harker went to bed early. She was very quiet. Dr. Seward heard a loud scream from Renfield’s room. An attendant ran into the office. He said Renfield had an accident. Renfield was lying on the floor. There was blood everywhere. Dr. Seward ran to help him.
