Many people believe Emma is her best book because it is a larger, more mature story. However, I believe that Pride and Prejudice is her most perfect work, and I will explain why.
Jane Austen began writing this book in 1796 when she was only twenty-one years old. However, she did not publish it until 1813, only four years before she died. Because she started it as a young woman but finished it later in life, the story is perfectly built. Every event and every character is important. For example, when Lydia runs away with Wickham, it is not just a sudden shock; it connects perfectly to everything that happened before. The story moves naturally from Jane and Bingley’s romance to the famous visit to Derbyshire.
I believe the most important part of a novel is not just the plot, but the characters and the humor. Even if a story is simple, it can be great if the characters feel alive. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen created her best masterpieces.
Austen’s humor is quiet and very clever. She does not use loud jokes. Instead, she describes people’s small mistakes and foolish behavior with great detail. She is "ruthless" when she writes about fools—she loves to show exactly how silly they are. Some people say she is "cynical" (which means she thinks people are generally selfish). But Austen is not mean; she simply understands that human motives are usually mixed. Like the character Mr. Bennet, she finds it very entertaining to watch people act foolishly.
Austen is often compared to a "miniature painter" because she focused on a very small world. She wrote about the English countryside and the lives of a few families. She did not write about big wars or adventures. However, inside that small world, she knew everything about humanity. She didn't make mistakes with her characters; her men and women feel like real people. She used tiny, natural details to build a picture, and nothing in her writing is a waste of space.
One of the greatest characters in the book is Mr. Collins. He is an unforgettable fool. He is formal, obsessed with social rank, and very selfish. He feels completely real, even today. We also meet Lady Catherine de Bourgh. She is rude and controlling, but in those days, a wealthy woman like her often acted that way. Then there is Mr. Bennet. He is a very funny man who uses sarcasm to deal with his foolish wife. His jokes are some of the best in English literature.
Finally, we must talk about the hero and the heroine. Darcy is Austen’s most interesting hero. He is very proud at the beginning, but he has a generous heart. When Elizabeth refuses to marry him, the shock changes him for the better. By the time they meet again at his home, Pemberley, he has become a kinder man.
Elizabeth Bennet is the soul of the book. She is clever, funny, and brave. In the past, most heroines were shy and afraid of men. But Elizabeth is different. She is not afraid of the powerful Mr. Darcy, and she is not afraid of the scary Lady Catherine. She is a natural, honest girl who knows her own mind.
There are many wonderful women in famous novels, but Elizabeth Bennet is the best. She is smart, full of life, and a perfect companion. After a hundred years of stories, she is still the heroine that readers love the most.
