Everyone woke up early. A loud, clear voice called from the woods. It was Dr. Livesey. Jim Hawkins felt happy to hear the doctor. But Jim Hawkins also felt very ashamed. He was bad and he left his friends. Now he was a prisoner with the pirates.

Dr. Livesey stood in the morning mist. Long John Silver was very friendly to him. He told the doctor that his patients (sick people) were doing well. Long John Silver smiled. He told the doctor that they had a surprise. He said Jim Hawkins was with them now.

Dr. Livesey was very surprised. He did not speak for a few seconds. Then he told Long John Silver that duty was important. He wanted to help the sick men first. Dr. Livesey entered the house. He looked at Jim Hawkins with a serious face.

Dr. Livesey was not afraid of the pirates. He talked to the sick men like a normal doctor in England. He looked at the man with the bandage on his head. Then he looked at George Merry. George Merry was a strange color. Dr. Livesey asked if he took his medicine (a liquid used to help sick people).

Morgan said that George Merry took it. Dr. Livesey smiled in a cold way. He said he did not want to lose any men. He wanted them to stay alive for the gallows (the place where criminals are hanged). The pirates looked at each other. They were angry but they stayed quiet.

Dr. Livesey looked at a pirate named Dick. Dick had a fever. The doctor said the pirates were very stupid. He said they were sick because they stayed in a bog (a very wet and soft area of land). Dr. Livesey gave them more medicine. The pirates obeyed him like children.

Then Dr. Livesey asked to talk to Jim Hawkins. George Merry shouted no. He was very angry. But Long John Silver hit a barrel with his hand. He told George Merry to be quiet. Long John Silver said he had a plan that was good for everyone.

Long John Silver asked Jim Hawkins for his parole (a promise not to run away). Jim Hawkins gave his word of honour. Then Long John Silver told the doctor to go outside the fence. He brought Jim Hawkins to the fence. They could talk through the wooden bars.

The other pirates were very angry with Long John Silver. They thought he was helping the enemy. Long John Silver shouted at them. He showed them the treasure map again. He said he was tricking the doctor. He told the pirates to go and make breakfast.

Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins walked to the fence. Long John Silver told the doctor that he saved Jim's life. He said the pirates did not want him as captain anymore. Long John Silver was very afraid. He asked the doctor for hope. He did not want to die.

Dr. Livesey saw that Long John Silver was serious. His voice shook with fear. The doctor asked if Long John Silver was afraid. Long John Silver said he was afraid of being hanged. He promised to help Jim Hawkins if the doctor helped him. Then Long John Silver walked away to let them talk.

Dr. Livesey looked at Jim Hawkins. He was very sad. He told Jim Hawkins that he was a coward. He said Jim Hawkins left when Captain Smollett was sick. Jim Hawkins began to cry. He said he already felt very bad. He told the doctor he was afraid of torture (the act of hurting someone to get information).

Dr. Livesey felt sorry for Jim Hawkins. He told Jim Hawkins to jump over the fence. He wanted Jim Hawkins to run away with him. But Jim Hawkins said no. He gave his parole (his promise) to Long John Silver. Jim Hawkins said he must go back.

Jim Hawkins told the doctor a secret. He said he found the ship. He told the doctor the ship was in the North Inlet. Dr. Livesey was very surprised. Jim Hawkins told the story of his adventure. The doctor said that Jim Hawkins saved their lives many times.

Dr. Livesey called Long John Silver back. He gave Long John Silver some advice. He told Long John Silver not to be in a hurry to find the treasure. Long John Silver was confused. He said he had to find the treasure to save his life.

The doctor gave one more warning. He told Long John Silver to look out for squalls (sudden, strong winds or unexpected trouble). Long John Silver asked for more information, but the doctor said no. It was a secret. But the doctor promised to help save Long John Silver in court.

Long John Silver was very happy. Dr. Livesey told Long John Silver to keep Jim Hawkins close. He told Long John Silver to shout if he needed help. Then Dr. Livesey shook hands with Jim Hawkins through the fence. The doctor walked away into the wood.
