В английском способность обычно выражается с помощью can/could и be able to. После модальных can/could основной глагол идет без to: I can swim.

can = способность: can стоит перед глаголом swim и показывает, что человек умеет или может плавать.
Учащиеся могут добавлять to после модального глагола, например I can to swim, или путать can и be able to.
