Your turn
Mark dice: My back really hurts. Las tres respuestas son posibles. ¿En qué se diferencian?
You should see a doctor. / See a doctor. / You must see a doctor.
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
Did you know it?
La idea central
If I were you,
si yo fuera tú
I'd
yo (condicional)
work from home tomorrow.
¿qué haría?
You should + verbo sin to: You should rest.
If I were you, I'd + verbo sin to: If I were you, I'd stay home.
You might want to + verbo: You might want to take a break.
Have you tried + -ing?: Have you tried putting ice on it?
Nora:Mark, are you OK?
Mark, ¿estás bien?
Mark:Not really. My back really hurts. I helped a friend move on Saturday.
Nora:Oh no. You should take it easy for a few days.
Ay, no. Deberías tomártelo con calma unos días.
Mark:I know, but I have a lot of work this week.
Nora:If I were you, I'd work from home tomorrow.
Yo que tú, mañana trabajaría desde casa.
Mark:That's a good idea.
Buena idea.
Nora:And you should really get it checked out.
Mark:Thanks, but I think I'll wait a few days.
Mark:How's your knee, by the way?
Por cierto, ¿cómo va tu rodilla?
Nora:Better, but it still hurts on the stairs. What do you think I should do?
Mark:Have you tried putting ice on it?
¿Ya probaste ponerle hielo?
Nora:I already tried that. It helps a little.
Ya lo probé. Ayuda un poco.
Mark:Then you might want to ask Dr. Patel about physical therapy.
Nora:You're right. I'll call the clinic tomorrow.
Tienes razón. Mañana llamo al consultorio.
Cómo responder a un consejo
That's a good idea.
Buena idea.
You're right. I'll call them tomorrow.
Tienes razón. Mañana los llamo.
I already tried that.
Ya lo probé.
Thanks, but I think I'll wait a few days.
What do you think I should do?
Ought to y recommend
You ought to rest a bit.
Deberías descansar un poco.
Para decir «te recomiendo que vayas al médico», recommend no va con you to (I recommend you to see a doctor no es la forma natural). Estas formas sí lo son:
I recommend seeing a doctor.
Te recomiendo ir al médico.
I'd recommend that you see a doctor.
Te recomendaría que fueras al médico.
Minidiagnóstico
Your turn
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
You might want to… es una sugerencia suave: propone la idea, pero deja la decisión a Mark. must y el imperativo solo son mucho más tajantes.
Your turn
If I you, I'd take a day off.
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
If I were you, I'd take a day off.
If I was you, I'd take a day off.
Igual que en «si yo fuera tú», lo habitual es If I were you; en la conversación también se oye was.
If I were you, I'd take a day off.
Your turn
Convierte este consejo en una frase con You should:
Take it easy for a few days.
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
You should take it easy for a few days.
Después de should va el verbo solo: You should take it easy, nunca should to take.
You should take it easy for a few days.
Deberías tomártelo con calma unos días.
Your turn
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
What do you think I should do?
La pregunta empieza con What do you think; lo que preguntas va después en el orden de una afirmación, sin inversión: I should do, no should I do.
What do you think I should do?
¿Qué crees que debería hacer?
Your turn
Mark te pregunta: Have you tried putting ice on it? Tú ya lo probaste. ¿Qué respuesta lo dice claramente?
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
I already tried that. dice que ya lo probaste. That's a good idea. valora la idea, pero no dice si ya la probaste. You should try it. le da un consejo a Mark y no responde a su pregunta.
Your turn
Una compañera de trabajo te dice: I have a terrible cold, but I have a lot of work.
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
If I were you, I'd work from home tomorrow. You should get some rest.
You should rest. If I were you, I'd work from home tomorrow.
«Yo que tú» es If I were you, I'd…; «deberías», You should…, en los dos casos con el verbo sin to.
Did you know it?
Llévatelo
You should really get it checked out.
If I were you, I'd work from home tomorrow.
Yo que tú, mañana trabajaría desde casa.
You might want to ask about physical therapy.
Have you tried putting ice on it?
¿Ya probaste ponerle hielo?
That's a good idea.
Buena idea.
You're right. I'll call them tomorrow.
Tienes razón. Mañana los llamo.
I already tried that.
Ya lo probé.
Thanks, but I think I'll wait a few days.
What do you think I should do?
If I were you, I'd… (seguidos del verbo sin to) o con You might want to… I think I'll wait a few days.
