Your turn
Las tres oraciones calcan el español. ¿Cómo las diría alguien que habla inglés?
I called for ask a question. / Despite of the rain, we went out. / For that, I left early.
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
I called to ask a question.
Despite the rain, we went out.
That's why I left early.
Para + verbo es to; despite no lleva of; y por eso es that's why o so.
Did you know it?
I was tired. I went home. I had work. I finished it.Less natural
I was tired, but I still had some work, so I went home and finished it there.
Sumar: also, too, as well
Also va antes del verbo principal o después de be; too y as well, al final.
I also need the invoice.
También necesito la factura.
She is also responsible for marketing.
También está a cargo de marketing.
I need it too.
Yo también lo necesito.
She works from home as well.
Ella también trabaja desde casa.
Contrastar

Although the idea is good, it's too expensive.
The idea is good. However, it's too expensive.
La idea es buena. Sin embargo, es demasiado cara.
Even though he was tired, he kept working.
Aunque estaba cansado, siguió trabajando.
Despite the rain, we went out.
A pesar de la lluvia, salimos.
In spite of the rain, we went out.
Causa
We stayed home because it was raining.
Nos quedamos en casa porque llovía.
We stayed home because of the rain.
Nos quedamos en casa por la lluvia.
Since you're here, can you help me?
Ya que estás aquí, ¿me ayudas?
The flight was delayed due to bad weather.
Consecuencia
It was raining, so we stayed home.
For that, I left early.Incorrect
I was tired. That's why I left early.
Estaba cansada. Por eso me fui temprano.
The data was incomplete. Therefore, we repeated the test.
As a result, the project was delayed.
Como consecuencia, el proyecto se retrasó.
Por eso es that's why o so. For that reason existe, pero es formal. Therefore y as a result son propios de la escritura y del trabajo.
Finalidad
I called for ask a question.Incorrect
I called to ask a question.
Llamé para hacer una pregunta.
We changed the process in order to save time.
Cambiamos el proceso para ahorrar tiempo.
I wrote it down so that I wouldn't forget.
Lo anoté para no olvidarme.
I went out for coffee.
Salí a tomar un café.
Para + verbo es to (o in order to, más formal); for va con un sustantivo. Para que + otra oración es so that.
Dar ejemplos y aclarar
We need better tools, for example a shared calendar.
Some languages, such as Spanish and French, have grammatical gender.

Let me put it another way.
Te lo digo de otra forma.
Falsos amigos: actually y eventually
Actualmente es currently o now.
Actually, I work from home now.
En realidad, ahora trabajo desde casa.
I currently work from home.
Actualmente trabajo desde casa.
Eventually, we found the problem.

Overall, it went well.
En general, salió bien.
Comas y oraciones largas
I was tired, I went home.Incorrect
I was tired, so I went home.
I was tired. I went home.
Estaba cansado. Me fui a casa.
Mejor dos oraciones que una enredada
Una oración larga con muchos because, and y although cuesta seguirla.
We changed the system because the old one was slow and because users complained although some people wanted to keep it and this caused several new problems.Less natural
We changed the system because the old one was slow and users had complained. However, some people wanted to keep it, and the change caused several new problems.
