Y en negativo cambian de sentido: mustn't prohíbe y don't have to libera.
Your turn
¿Estas dos oraciones dicen lo mismo?
You mustn't come early. / You don't have to come early.
CorrectNot quiteCheck the capital letters.Check the accents.
No. La primera prohíbe: no debes venir temprano.

must
have to
need to
necesidad práctica
necesito, tengo que
should, ought to
consejo, lo correcto
deberías
be supposed to
lo acordado o lo que se espera
se supone que
had better
consejo urgente: si no, hay consecuencias
más vale que, mejor
mustn't
prohibición
no debes, no se puede
don't have to, don't need to
no hace falta
no hace falta, no tienes que
Must y have to
I must call her today.
Tengo que llamarla hoy sí o sí.
You must be careful.
Tienes que tener cuidado.
I have to get up early tomorrow.
Mañana tengo que madrugar.
She has to wear a uniform at work.
En el trabajo tiene que usar uniforme.
Do you have to leave now?
¿Te tienes que ir ya?
I have to go.
Me tengo que ir.
Do I have to sign here?
¿Tengo que firmar aquí?
Must suena a que la obligación la siente quien habla o la impone una regla escrita; have to, a algo que viene de fuera. En la conversación diaria, sobre todo en inglés americano, have to es mucho más frecuente: si dudas, usa have to.
Must no tiene pasado ni futuro, así que ahí siempre va have to:
We had to cancel the meeting.
Tuvimos que cancelar la reunión.
I'll have to think about it.
Lo voy a tener que pensar.
I've had to change my plans.
Tuve que cambiar mis planes.
Prohibido o innecesario
You mustn't touch this button.
No debes tocar este botón.
Visitors mustn't enter this area.
Prohibido el paso a visitantes.
You don't have to come early.
No hace falta que vengas temprano.
You don't need to bring anything.
No hace falta que traigas nada.
Mustn't suena británico y bastante formal. En Estados Unidos, para prohibir se dice más bien can't o not allowed to:
You can't park here.
Aquí no te puedes estacionar.
You're not allowed to smoke here.
Aquí no se permite fumar.
You don't need to bring nothing.Incorrect
You don't need to bring anything.
No hace falta que traigas nada.
Should y ought to: consejo
You should talk to her.
Deberías hablar con ella.
We should leave soon.
Deberíamos irnos pronto.
You shouldn't work so much.
No deberías trabajar tanto.
You ought to be more careful.
Deberías tener más cuidado.
Ought to significa lo mismo que should, pero es menos frecuente; basta con reconocerlo.
Lo que se debió hacer: should have
El español usa deber para las dos cosas; en inglés, el reproche es should have y must have es una deducción.
should have + participio
shouldn't have + participio
You should have called me.
Me hubieras llamado.
I shouldn't have said that.
No debí decir eso.
¿Hacía falta o no?
You didn't need to buy any food.
No hacía falta que compraras comida.
You needn't have bought any food.
You needn't worry.
No te preocupes.
You don't need to worry.
No te preocupes.
Be supposed to: lo acordado
Se supone que tiene su equivalente exacto, pero con otra forma: el sujeto va delante y después be supposed to.
It's supposed that we start at nine.Less natural
We're supposed to start at nine.
Se supone que empezamos a las nueve.
You're not supposed to park here.
Aquí no se debería estacionar.
What am I supposed to do?
Better you leave now.Incorrect
You'd better leave now.
Más vale que te vayas ya.
We'd better check the weather.
Mejor revisemos el clima.
You'd better not be late.
