Your turn

I enjoy to read. / Before to leave, turn off the lights. / I want that you stay.

La idea central

verbo + to + verbo: want to go
verbo + -ing: enjoy reading
preposición + -ing: before leaving
verbo + persona + to + verbo: ask him to wait

Verbos con to y verbos con -ing

Piden toPiden -ing
want, need, decide, plan, hope, expect, promise, agree, refuse, learnenjoy, avoid, finish, keep, mind, suggest, consider, imagine, miss
I want to leave.
Me quiero ir.
She decided to wait.
Decidió esperar.
I hope to see you soon.
Espero verte pronto.
I'm trying to finish this.
Estoy tratando de terminar esto.
I've decided to stay.
Decidí quedarme.
I enjoy reading.
Disfruto leer.
She avoids driving at night.
Evita manejar de noche.
We finished cleaning the office.
Terminamos de limpiar la oficina.
Keep trying.
Sigue intentando.
Do you mind waiting a moment?
¿Te molesta esperar un momento?
I suggest taking a break.
Sugiero que hagamos una pausa.
I miss living by the ocean.

Un truco: si después de to podrías poner un sustantivo (looking forward to the trip, used to the noise), es preposición.

I'm looking forward to see you. Incorrect
I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Tengo muchas ganas de verte.
I'm used to working late.
Ya me acostumbré a trabajar hasta tarde.

Verbo + persona + to

Let y make: sin to

Let me explain.
Déjame explicarte.
She let me use her phone.
Me dejó usar su celular.
The news made me laugh.
La noticia me hizo reír.
They made us wait.

He stopped smoking.
Dejó de fumar.
He stopped to smoke.
Paró para fumarse un cigarro.
I remember meeting her.
Me acuerdo de cuando la conocí.
Remember to call her.
Acuérdate de llamarla.
I tried to open the door.
Intenté abrir la puerta.
Try restarting the computer.
Prueba reiniciar la computadora.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

I'll never forget meeting him.
Nunca voy a olvidar cuando lo conocí.
I forgot to call him.
Se me olvidó llamarlo.
I regret saying that.
Me arrepiento de haber dicho eso.
We regret to inform you that the flight has been canceled.

It started raining.
Empezó a llover.
It started to rain.
Empezó a llover.
I like to read before bed.
Me gusta leer antes de dormir.

Help va con o sin to; sin to es más frecuente:

She helped me carry the boxes.
Me ayudó a cargar las cajas.

Y make lleva to cuando está en pasiva:

We were made to wait.
Nos hicieron esperar.
